This is a planning series introducing Korea’s agricultural and livestock ventures with breakthrough technologies.

The first step is to meet the livestock health care system that can produce much better quality meat when livestock undergo a so-called health checkup.

This is reporter Oh Jeom-gon.

A livestock farm that raises 1,800 pigs in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do.

Two veterinarians use syringes to draw blood from the piglets’ bodies.

[신현민 / 수의사 : 혈액 채취를 해서 농장의 질병 유무를 판단하고요. 면역력의 상태를 파악해서….]

Once a quarter, this blood is used to monitor the pig’s health.

According to the results of blood analysis, the amount and cycle of feed are determined, and genetic analysis is also performed to determine which diseases are susceptible to.

There are about 150 livestock farms nationwide.

These are piglets who have been born for about 50 days.

Another purpose of doing pig health care, so to speak, health checkups, is to reduce the use of unnecessary antibiotics.

In fact, the swine health screening system has also reduced the use of antibiotics by up to 83%.
