(Seoul = Yonhap News) Boycott of global fashion brands, including H&M, is ramping up in China.

It started when these brands criticized human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China and declared that they would not procure products and raw materials produced in Xinjiang.

On the 22nd (local time), when the European Union (EU), the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada announced sanctions against China for human rights abuses in Xinjiang, Chinese consumers started boycotting these countries’ brands.

On the 25th, almost all online shopping malls in China lost H&M-related products at the same time and were not searched. Some Chinese netizens expressed their anger by posting videos of burning Nike shoes on the Internet.

Netizens also listed Uniqlo, Adidas, Gap, Pillar, and New Balance on boycott companies. The Chinese government is promoting boycott of its own people.

Earlier, Western countries, such as the United States and Europe, imposed simultaneous sanctions against China, citing the human rights abuses of the Uighurs in Xinjiang.

The United States has accused the Chinese government of oppressing the Uighurs and denounced it as a “genocide,” but China denies it.
