Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled an’intelligent transforming robot’ that combines future mobility and robotics technology. Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun’s plan to transform the Hyundai Motor Group into a’smart mobility solution’ company gradually emerges.

On the 10th, Hyundai Motor Group introduced an intelligent transforming robot’Tiger X-1′ developed by New Horizons Studio, an organization of Silicon Valley open innovation (open innovation) in the United States, through its YouTube channel.

The Tiger X-1 looks similar to a Mars rover. It is characterized by a compact size with an unmanned operation method. It is 80cm long and 40cm wide and weighs about 12kg. It is characterized by running or over obstacles using 4 legs and wheels. It runs on a general road and passes through a bridge on a curved road. It is also possible to fly over long distances by combining with unmanned aerial vehicles such as drones. He is the right person for the’last mile’ delivery. An official of the Hyundai Motor Group explained, “The Tiger is designed to perform multi-purpose tasks that are difficult for general vehicles, such as transporting supplies during scientific exploration and emergency rescue, and delivering goods to remote areas using various sensors.”

Hyundai Motor Group’s release of Tiger X-1 is an analysis that Chairman Chung is in contact with the blueprint for the future revealed at a town hall meeting with employees in 2019. At the time, Chairman Chung explained, “The future business of the group will be 50% for automobiles, 30% for UAM, and 20% for robotics.” At that time, it was only accepted as a vision for the future at a declarative level. This is because it was difficult to imagine that Hyundai Motor Group, which has a strong identity as an automobile manufacturer, will transform into a future mobility company.

However, Chairman Chung acquired the American robotics company Boston Dynamics last year and began to put together a puzzle to complete the robotics blueprint of the Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics business roadmap was specifically revealed in the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, which developed the most technologically advanced robots such as the four-legged walking robot’Big Dog”Spot’ and the two-legged upright walking robot’Atlas’. Chairman Chung showed a strong will to foster robotics business by investing 240 billion won in private assets. According to the Hyundai Motor Group, the global robot market is expected to grow by an annual average of 32% until 2025, reaching $177.2 billion (about 196 trillion KRW). If Hyundai Motor Group, which has strong manufacturing advantages, preoccupies the robotics market, it is expected to generate high synergy in related business areas from manufacturing to service.

In particular, the Tiger X-1 is highly evaluated for its combination of mobility as well as simple robotics. In his New Year’s address this year, Chairman Chung said, “We will continue to invest in new growth areas such as UAM and robotics, and we will thoroughly prepare to expand the’new mobility area’ in the near future.” The Tiger X-1, which is capable of delivering the last mile, has shown an example of a new mobility area by combining seemingly separate divisions of robotics and mobility.
