Domestic and foreign automakers are rushing to introduce new’electric vehicles’ in the third quarter of 2021. There is also a wide range of product lines, from small crossovers to sports utility vehicles (SUVs). Hyundai Motor Company’s luxury brands Genesis and Kia Motors introduce their first electric cars. Tesla’s fifth electric car Model Y will land in Korea, and Mercedes’ flagship electric car sedan EQS will also be released.
It’s not just electric cars. New internal combustion engine vehicles such as mid-size and ultra-large SUVs are also expected to be released. This is good news for consumers who don’t like electric cars yet. Ssangyong Motors plans to release the next-generation mid-size SUV J100, and Chevrolet plans to release a super-sized SUV with a total length of more than 5m.
◇ Genesis and Ssangyong Motors to introduce their first electric cars
Genesis will launch its first electric car in the third quarter of this year. It is the project name’JW’. It is produced based on E-GMP, a platform exclusively for electric vehicles that Hyundai Motor Company recently unveiled. It features a large interior space and long driving distance. According to overseas media, JW is expected to be equipped with SK Innovation’s latest battery pack. It is expected to be able to drive up to 500km or more on a single charge.
The appearance is observed in the form of a small crossover. According to the American automotive media, Cascoops, JW is expected to follow the Mint concept car design unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 2019. In particular, it is expected that the’quad lamp (consisting of four lamps)’, a symbol of the Genesis family look, will be mounted. Crest grills are also expected to be applied. Normally electric vehicles do not have an internal combustion engine, so the grill is blocked, but JW is expected to have an air intake in the shape of a crest grill in the center of the lower part of the bumper.
During the same period, Kia Motors launched the first dedicated electric vehicle CV, spurring the transition to the electric vehicle business system. It means that it is the first work of Kia Motors to which E-GMP, an electric vehicle platform, was applied. Kia Motors plans to increase the proportion of electric vehicle sales in the global market to 25% in 2029 by launching 7 pure electric vehicle models starting with CV and attempting to convert to an electric vehicle company. In particular, as the brand is being renewed in earnest in January of this year, a new emblem is expected to be attached to the CV.
The specific appearance of the CV has not been disclosed, but it can be inferred through the crossover electric vehicle concept car’Imagine by Kia’, which was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2019. It is said that CV was developed based on the design of Imagine by Kia. Imagine by Kia, in the form of a small crossover, reinterpreted Kia’s unique’tiger nose grille’ through a uniquely shaped lamp line surrounding the headlight. The windshield that extends to the roof of the back seat secures a wide view and emphasizes a futuristic feel.
◇From Tesla to Mercedes… Imports are also electric car wind
The imported car industry is also releasing new electric vehicles in the third quarter of this year. Tesla introduces its fifth electric car model Y in Korea. This crossover electric vehicle based on the Model 3 was first launched in North America in March. The domestic sales amount has not been announced, but the current model Y’s base price is $46,700 (about 56 million won) for the long range and $54,700 (about 66 million won) for the performance. In addition, up to $12,000 (approximately 14,000 won) will be added depending on the choice of interior and exterior colors, wheels, and self-driving options.
The long range can drive up to 300 miles (about 482 km) on a single charge, and reaches a speed of 0 to 60 miles (about 100 km) in 5.5 seconds. The performance can drive up to 280 miles (about 450 km), and it takes 3.5 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 miles (about 100 km) per hour. In particular, Tesla started producing a 7-seater model following the existing 5-seater model from November. The 7-seater Model Y is more expensive than the existing 5-seater, $3,000 (34.4 million won), and can travel up to 314 miles (505 km) on a single charge.
Mercedes-Benz releases the flagship electric car sedan EQS. For EQS,’EQ’, which means Benz’s electrified model, has the letter’S’ applied to the upper class model. From its name, it means that it is aiming for a luxury electric car sedan. Looking at the exterior of the EQS concept car, which was unveiled earlier in May, not only the light belt running from the front grill to the rear but also hundreds of LED (light-emitting diode) lamps installed instead of the radiator grill emphasized the futuristic feeling. The interior is said to be inspired by the finest yachts.
EQS is equipped with a 100kWh battery, and the driving distance reaches 700km per charge. It takes 20 minutes from 350kw charging power to 80% battery charging. It outputs more than 469 horsepower (350 kw) and a torque equivalent to 77.5 kg/m (760 Nm), and takes less than 4.5 seconds from a standstill to 100 km/h. In particular, Benz explained that an electric motor was installed on the front and rear wheels, respectively, and a model of a balanced vehicle was presented through an integrated battery on the floor.
Key components of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe include a redesigned 2.0L gasoline turbo engine, a torqueflight eight-speed automatic transmission, two electric motors and batteries, and a plug-in-based charging system. Excellent driving performance can be implemented not only on general roads but also off-road. The total electric driving distance is about 40km.
◇ The internal combustion locomotive is decorated with an SUV
A new internal combustion engine vehicle is also expected to mark the third quarter. Ssangyong Motors is releasing the midsize SUV J100. Ssangyong Motor plans to launch seven next-generation models by 2025 along with the electric vehicle E100. Ssangyong Motors explained that the J100 will contain Ssangyong’s unique personality in an authentic off-road SUV style. In particular, it will fill the gap between the large SUV G4 Rexton and the semi-medium SUV Korando. This means that it will have a lineup of SUVs that encompasses large, medium, semi-medium and small.
Chevrolet introduces the Tahoe, a super-large SUV with a total length of more than 5m. The Tahoe has a body length of 5351 mm, and the overall width and height are 2058 mm and 1927 mm, respectively. The industry explains that cars and campings have become popular in recent years, making them suitable for leisure use. Equipped with a V8 6.2L gasoline engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission, it has a maximum output of 355 to 420 hp and a maximum torque of 53.0 to 63.6 kg·m. The latest technologies such as electronic button transmission and air suspension were also applied. In particular, fierce competition is expected with the super-sized SUVs successively released by imported car makers such as Ford and Lincoln this year.
