A senior official from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) revealed that there is a link between the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University-AstraZeneca (AZ) and the side effects of blood clots. It is expected that the remarks came out amid reports of side effects of blood clots after receiving the AZ vaccine in some European countries.

According to the AFP news agency on the 6th, Marco Kevalelli, EMA’s head of vaccines, told a local press in Italy, “What we can say now is that blood clotting is clearly related to vaccines.” However, it is not clear which component of the vaccine causes this reaction, he said.

“Sooner or later, the link between vaccines and thrombotic side effects will be clarified by the EMA,” Kevaleri added. “We have to understand how this happens.”

There have been a number of deaths from side effects of blood clots after receiving the AZ vaccine in European countries such as the UK and Germany. According to UK health officials, 30 cases of thrombotic side effects have been reported in the UK after receiving the AZ vaccine. Seven of them lost their lives. In Germany, there were 31 thrombotic side effects, of which 9 fatalities occurred. In Norway, six side effects of blood clots were reported, of which four died.

Health authorities in each country have recommended vaccination, saying that the causal relationship between vaccination and the occurrence of blood clots has not been confirmed despite the occurrence of such side effects.
