[세계로컬핫뉴스] Gyeongnam-do, Korea Gas Corporation’s LNG carrier repair order received

[경남=세계타임즈 최성룡 기자] Gyeongsangnam-do (provincial governor Kim Gyeong-su) announced that it has attracted regular repairs for 12 LNG carriers operated by Korea Gas Corporation to mid-sized shipyards in the province (HSG Seongdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samgang S&C) this year.

Regular repair of LNG carriers refers to the inspection and repair of ships in operation at shipyards twice every 5 years for stable LNG supply.

A total of 25 LNG carriers are being operated by the Korea Gas Corporation, and 12 ships to be repaired at shipyards in the province this year are worth KRW 60 billion.

Until now, the Korea Gas Corporation has entrusted regular repairs to overseas shipyards such as Singapore and Malaysia, where labor costs are low.

Gyeongnam-do is predicting that securing the repair volume will prevent foreign currency outflow and contribute to the vitalization of medium-sized shipyards that were in trouble.

In the meantime, Gyeongnam Province has visited large shipyards and gas corporations, etc., and has been making all-around efforts to secure supply, led by Vice Governor Park Jong-won, in order to normalize the management of mid-sized shipyards in the province, to secure a stable job and to stabilize employment.

In particular, to receive regular repairs of LNG carriers from Korea Gas Corporation to shipyards in the province, he visited Korea Gas Corporation several times since last year and played a great role in supporting working-level consultations and on-site investigations.

Gyeongnam-do plans to work closely with Korea Gas Corporation and shipyards in the province to reinforce repair facilities and transfer related technologies to support various measures to support the domestic LNG ship repair field, which has suffered from lack of facilities and experience so far.

Gyeongnam-do deputy governor Park Jong-won said, “The securing of work for LNG carriers will lead to the vitality of the shipbuilding industry in the province, not only creating jobs in the shipbuilding industry, but also strengthening the capacity for repair and remodeling of medium-sized shipyards.

“With this order attraction, we expect to contribute to the diversification of industries in the repair and remodeling of eco-friendly ships such as LNG fuel propulsion ships and bunkering ships, and support the Gyeongnam shipbuilding industry to transform into a decarbonised, eco-friendly future ship such as hydrogen and ammonia. I will not spare it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gyeongnam-do plans to invest 21.6 billion won in Goseong-gun by 2022 to establish a repair and remodeling support center, and to secure repair and remodeling technology and strengthen capabilities of shipyards in the province through the use of joint equipment and fostering repair and remodeling engineering.
