Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun and POSCO Chairman Jeong-woo Choi met on the 16th to cooperate in various fields of hydrogen business such as hydrogen electric vehicle (FCEV) and hydrogen fuel cell power generation business. It is noteworthy what synergies will be created by the largest domestic automobile companies and steel companies in the hydrogen field called the future eco-friendly energy.

On the 16th, the management of Hyundai Motor Group and POSCO Group signed a’business agreement on hydrogen business cooperation’ at Cheongsong University in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. From the Hyundai Motors side, Chairman Chung, Young-Woon Gong, President of Strategic Planning, Hyundai Steel Vice President Park Jong-seong, and from POSCO, Choi, Hak-dong Kim, Head of Steel Division, and Yoo Byung-ok, Head of Industrial Gas and Hydrogen Business Division.

The two companies said, “We agreed that it is necessary to achieve carbon neutrality through the establishment of a hydrogen ecosystem to create a sustainable world, and we have signed an agreement on this day after actively searching for areas of cooperation where the two companies can exhibit synergy.” Revealed.

Under this agreement, POSCO decided to convert 1,500 vehicles, including trucks operated at Pohang and Gwangyang Works, into Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen electric vehicles. The plan is to use by-product hydrogen produced at the steel mill as an energy source for hydrogen trucks. Hyundai Motor Company is developing a hydrogen truck that considers the characteristics of steel logistics. A hydrogen charging station for hydrogen trucks will also be built in the steel mill. In addition, POSCO will develop green hydrogen manufacturing technology using ammonia, and Hyundai Motor will promote POSCO’s fuel cell power generation business using green hydrogen. In addition, the two companies decided to participate in the technology development project of the green hydrogen production project overseas. Until now, Hyundai Motor Company has been cooperating by applying the non-coated metal separator material developed by POSCO to the hydrogen electric vehicle’Nexo’.

Chairman Chung said, “The paradigm shift to the hydrogen economy is a challenge facing all business fields and all companies, and is an essential factor for realizing a sustainable future.” Chairman Choi said, “From the perspective of POSCO producing hydrogen and using it by Hyundai Motor Company, we will find various opportunities for cooperation and secure leadership in the hydrogen economy.”
