21 years ago in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, a victim who was accused of the so-called’Yakchon 5-geori murder case’ won a lawsuit for damages against the government.

The judge said the victims have suffered irreparable damage from the state’s tort, and pointed out that the same should not be repeated again.

The movie’Retrial’ is based on the murder of a taxi driver killed in a weapon in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do in August 2000.

The reporter Choi Mo, who was 15 years old at the time, was imprisoned for 10 years as a criminal, but it was revealed that he was later framed.

In the early stages of the investigation, it was confirmed that the police made false confessions due to illegal confinement and violence.

While Choi was in jail, the real criminal who committed the crime for the taxi driver’s money was caught, but the prosecution covered the truth with poor investigation and command such as returning the arrest warrant several times.

In the end, Choi, who requested a retrial only after completing his sentence and being released, was not framed for acquittal in 2016, 16 years after the incident occurred.

Five years later, through a lawsuit for damages filed by Mr. Choi, the legal liability of the state and the police and prosecutors who were in charge of the investigation were recognized.

The court ruled that the police at the time conducted illegal investigations against innocent Choi, who was a socially underprivileged person, such as illegal confinement and harsh behavior, and that the prosecution also released the true offender through an unreasonable investigation and command, and that the state pays 1.6 billion won in total to the Choi’s family. I did.

Also, 20% of the compensation was paid by the police and prosecutors in charge at the time.

The judge stressed that Choi had suffered indelible damage that could not be converted into money in his life, and that it was necessary to raise awareness that state agencies should never commit such illegal activities again.

But what Choi wants more than anything else is a sincere apology from the perpetrators.
