The trial was virtually ended when Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was sentenced to a repatriation trial for destruction four years after he was first investigated by the prosecution for the Gukjeong Nongdan case.
However, even if this ruling is finalized, the court dispute by Vice Chairman Lee is expected to continue as the trial for illegal succession of Samsung’s management rights is in the beginning.

In January 2017, the Special Prosecutors’ Team of Park Young-soo summoned Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong as the first suspect on charges of unjustly supporting former President Park Geun-hye and Choi Seo-won for management succession.

After requesting twice, an arrest warrant was issued, and the special prosecutor handed over the vice-chairman Lee to trial on charges such as bribery.

In keeping with the name of the trial of the century, fierce battles between the super-luxurious lawyers and special prosecutors followed, and Vice-Chairman Lee, who was sentenced to five years in prison for the first trial, was released after a year after probation at the second trial.

After the Supreme Court’s reconsideration and re-appeal, Choi Seo-won was fined 20 billion won and an additional 6.3 billion won for 18 years in prison in the Supreme Court last June. Is confirmed.
After the longest court battle, Vice Chairman Lee was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at a remand for destruction, and the legal judgment on the case of Gukjeong Nongdan was actually finished.

Separately, however, Vice Chairman Lee is also being tried for the first trial on charges of illegally intervening in the process of merging Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries in order to succeed in management.
It was handed over to trial in September last year along with 10 former and current executives including Ji-Sung Choi, Choong-Ki Jang, and Jong-Joong Kim, for illegal transactions under the Capital Markets Act, manipulating market prices, negotiating duties, and violating the External Audit Act.

After the trial preparation process at the end of last year, a formal trial is expected to begin soon. Apart from the Gukjeong Nongdan case, another fierce court battle is expected to continue.
If Vice-Chairman Lee, who was re-jailed after three years in the case of Gukjeong Nongdan, is convicted in connection with the alleged merger with Samsung, the legitimacy of the succession process will be shaken even more.
