During the Sewol ferry disaster, the former and current maritime police commanders were sentenced to the first trial today, accused of killing passengers for failing to take proper initial measures.

While the defendants, including former Maritime Police Commissioner Kim Seok-gyun, are alleging innocence, the prosecution requested the courts to convict all 11 of them in prison.

During the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014, only one of the 123 suits of the sea police was responsible for the criminal responsibility for the’maritime responsibility theory’.

After five years, the prosecutors organized a special investigation team and began a full re-investigation, and passed 11 maritime police commanders to trial, including former Maritime Police Commissioner Kim Seok-gyun and former West Sea Regional Coastal Police Commissioner Kim Soo-hyun who said “There is no crime.”

At the time of the Sewol ferry disaster, charges were applied for killing 303 passengers and injuring 142 people for failing to fulfill the duty of care necessary for rescue.

It is said that he violated his duty of care in business because he could not properly command and control the ship, even though he should have been able to grasp the situation on the site of the Sewol ferry and command the immediate exit guidance and entry into the hull.

After a year of trial, the court will hold a first trial sentence today (15th).

At a decision trial held last month, the prosecution asked former chief Kim Seok-gyun for five years of safe deposit.

This is the highest sentence set by law.

As the head of the Coast Guard and Head of the Central Rescue Headquarters, he avoided responsibility even though he had a heavy responsibility. As a result, he accused hundreds of passengers, including students on the boat, of the deaths awaiting rescue from the Coast Guard.

I asked the court to sentence all ten other defendants to jail sentences.

On the other hand, chief executive Kim and others said that even though they apologized to the bereaved family for failing to prevent the accident, they argued that there could not be a correct answer to all disaster scene rescue, and that it was not legally a crime.

Bereaved families are condemning that they must be punished for committing murder, whether intentionally or by mistake.

I am also going to go to court this time to see if I can properly hold the responsibility for the Coast Guard command and see the results of the sentence.
