First of all, the total amount of private education expenses decreased last year when Corona 19 first occurred?

[기자]

According to the results of the 2020 elementary, middle and high school private education expenditure survey conducted by the National Statistical Office and the Ministry of Education, the total private education cost for elementary, middle and high schools last year was 9,3 trillion won, down 11.8% from the previous year’s 10,500 billion won.

In particular, private education expenses for elementary school were KRW 3.6 trillion, down 25.2% from the previous year.

The rate of participation in private education also fell 7.9%p to 66.5%.

The number of hours of private tutoring per week decreased by 1.2 hours to 6.5 hours.

In addition, the average monthly private education expenditure per capita last year remained unchanged at 289,000 won, but the private education expenditure per elementary school student per month decreased by 23.7%p from the previous year to 222,000 won.

On the other hand, for high school students who are in urgent need for a career or further study, private education expenditures increased by 5.8% to 388,000 won per month.

It was analyzed that the learning that could not be filled by the school class was filled with private education.

Even though private education expenses have decreased in the aftermath of the corona, depending on the level of income, private education expenses per month are up to 5 times higher?

[기자]

The higher the household income level, the higher the private education expenditure.

The households with the highest monthly average private education expenditure per student were over 8 million won, the highest monthly income.

Students in this income range spent 504,000 won per month as private education expenses.

On the other hand, students with a household income of less than 2 million won have a difference of more than 5 times at 99,000 won per month for private education.

This means that private education costs have decreased because of Corona 19, but the polarization of education due to the income gap has hardly improved.

Private education expenditures also differed by region.

The average monthly private education expenditure per student in Seoul was 433,000 won, down 4.4% from the previous year.

On the other hand, small and medium-sized cities reached 282,000 won, down 12.2% from the previous year.

In particular, in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, where a large number of corona19 confirmed last year, the average monthly private education cost per person was 23 thousand won, a 16.3% decrease from the previous year.
