Open Democratic Party representative Choi Kang-wook, who was accused of issuing a false internship certificate to the son of former Justice Minister Cho Kook, was sentenced to probation from imprisonment at the first trial.

Choi, who was sentenced to imprisonment or higher in a criminal case and was in danger of losing his position as a lawmaker, immediately appealed.

Open Democratic Party CEO Choi Kang-wook has been tried on charges of issuing a fake internship certificate to the son of former Minister Cho Guk in 2017 while working as a lawyer at the law firm Cheongmaek.

At the decision hearing last month, the prosecution requested Choi to be sentenced to one year in prison for obstructing the admissions process for graduate school.

The first trial court also admitted most of Choi’s charges.

First of all, the judge pointed out that the activities of former Minister Cho’s son in 2017 consisted of going to work several holidays and doing work such as copying documents, and the internship confirmation was false.

In addition, due to the internship confirmation that differs from the actual job content, the admissions officer misunderstood and misunderstood it, and it was judged that it had no choice but to have a big impact on the acceptance or not.

Along with this, in a message sent by Choi to former Minister Cho’s spouse, Professor Jeong Gyeong-sim, he admitted that he knew that a false internship certificate would be used for the entrance exam for Cho’s son.

The court sentenced him to eight months in prison and two years of probation, reflecting in the sentencing that similar behaviors should be prevented, saying that CEO Choi’s actions could not be seen as undermining the fairness of the entrance exam.

President Choi said he was very sorry for the judgment and recognition of the judges, and immediately filed an appeal.

The imprisonment sentence for which CEO Choi was sentenced is the sentence for the loss of the position of a legislator according to the Public Office Election Act and the National Assembly Act.

However, as CEO Choi has announced that he will continue the court dispute through an appeal, he is expected to remain in the position of parliament until the decision is finalized.

Before the general elections in April of last year, CEO Choi made a statement on the Internet that the son of former Minister Cho actually intern was, but was also accused of promulgating false facts under the election law and is being tried separately.

Choi’s charges are also directly related to the allegations of corruption in the entrance examination for the children of former Minister Cho.

As such, there is also a prospect that the results of this trial will have a negative impact on former Minister Cho, ahead of a trial on family corruption.
