[사회]Increasing wage inequality due to corona…

Last year, in the aftermath of the Corona 19 crisis, it was found that workers’ wage inequality for the first time in the current government has intensified.

According to a report titled’Changes in Wage Inequality by Region’ released by the Korea Employment Information Service recently, the Gini coefficient of domestic workers’ wages was 0.306 last year, up from 0.294 last year.

The Gini coefficient, an index of distribution inequality, has a value of 0 to 1, and the closer to 1, the greater the inequality.

The wage Gini coefficient was 0.335 in 2016, but after falling to 0.317 in 2017, the first year of the current government, it continued to decline to 0.309 in 2018 and 0.294 in 2019, and then rebounded last year.

Researcher Cho Min-soo, a researcher at the Employment Information Service, who wrote the report, analyzed, “The increase in the number of corona19 confirmed patients and social distancing seems to have a big impact on the intensification of wage inequality last year.”

It is explained that the damage from the Corona 19 incident was concentrated in some industries, such as lodging, food and beverage, travel, and leisure, which adversely affected the distribution of worker wages.

The low rate of increase in the minimum wage last year seems to have contributed to intensifying wage inequality.

For the current government, the minimum wage increase rate remained high at 16.4% in 2018 and 10.9% in 2019, but dropped to 2.9% last year.
