Metal or polymer implants are widely used in dentistry and orthopedics.

If this implant is not properly combined with the bone tissue in the body, it has a side effect of causing inflammation.

Researchers in Korea have solved this problem by developing a technology to coat a metal or polymer material with an artificial bone component with a laser.

Reporter Kim Jin-du reports.

A metal implant is placed in the tooth bone to replace the missing tooth.

Straighten the curved vertebrae with screws and metal wires.

It is an implant surgery performed in dentistry or orthopedics.

However, if the bone and metal are not properly bonded with different components, inflammation will occur and you will have to undergo a second surgery.

A domestic research team solved this problem by coating the surface of the metal with an artificial bone component.

Titanium, the material of the implant, is placed in a liquid containing artificial bone components such as calcium and phosphorus.

Then, when a powerful laser is fired, the titanium surface slightly melts and the artificial bone component seeps into it to form a hard layer, and the components continue to accumulate on top of it.

Titanium has a distinct metallic luster on its surface. However, when the artificial bone component is coated, the surface turns to a whitish color.

By using these coated implant materials, you can prevent inflammation by attaching the bones to the bones.

Conventionally, a method of spraying bone components onto a metal surface has been studied, but the adhesion was low, so it did not show a great effect.

This technology takes only a few minutes to coat and can be applied not only to metals but also to medical polymer materials, which is expected to broaden its application range.
