[사회]’Humidifier disinfectant’ SK Chemicals and former representatives of Aekyung Industrial are innocent

Officials of the company that manufactured and sold the product’Humidifier Mate’, the second largest number of victims of humidifier disinfectant after Oxy, were acquitted at the first trial.

The Seoul Central District Court pleaded innocence to 13 officials, including former SK Chemicals CEO Hong Ji-ho and Ahn Yong-chan, former CEO of Aekyung Industrial, who were charged with business manslaughter.

The judiciary judged that even if all the studies conducted so far were put together, there was insufficient evidence to suggest that the ingredients of CMIT·MIT, the raw material of the product’humidifier mate’, caused or worsened lung disease or asthma.

CMIT and MIT are different ingredients than PHMG, a raw material for humidifier disinfectant, which was previously convicted by other manufacturers such as Oxy.

The officials of the’Oxy’ product, which suffered the most damage from the humidifier disinfectant, have already been convicted in the trial, but this is the first time the court has decided on the harmfulness of the’humidifier mate’.

The court also sentenced four former employees who were accused of supplying toxic ingredients to oxy while working for SK Chemicals in the past because they were not involved enough to take responsibility for death or injury.

The victims of humidifier disinfectants criticized the ruling as an unacceptable ruling immediately after the sentence, and said they would hold the company accountable until the end by inflicting such social disasters to not happen again.

The prosecution also said that the ruling overlooked the difference between animal testing and human damage, and said it would appeal to corporate managers who neglected safety measures while neglecting the results of the examination by experts.
