Chinese electronics company Xiaomi has posted a background image that describes hanbok as Chinese culture in a smartphone store, causing controversy.

Recently, an accusation was posted in a domestic online community stating that images of men and women in hanbok were posted on Xiaomi’s smartphone wallpaper store. When looking at the images posted on the Xiaomi store, the title was’China Culture’, and the detailed description said it was Chuseok traditional hanbok.

Photos that appear in the wallpaper store are approved in advance by Xiaomi. Therefore, it is argued that this incident is not a mere happening, but that the intention is to incorporate Korean culture into one of its own.

This is not the first time the controversy over the distortion of Hanbok in China. Recently, in Chinese dramas, the number of characters appearing wearing hanbok, gad, and manganese is gradually increasing. Korean netizens pointed out that “China is deliberately distorting the culture,” saying that there are cases of wearing hanbok costumes to maids in Chinese historical dramas.

In addition, in November of last year, Chinese game company Shining Nikki released a’Korean traditional costume’ hanbok as a game item, but was criticized by Chinese netizens and terminated Korean service. When Hanbok items were released on a Chinese server at the same time, Chinese netizens criticized the game company for saying that Hanbok was a traditional Chinese costume from the Ming Dynasty. Some Chinese people argued that hanbok is a Chinese costume because it is a costume of ethnic Koreans, a minority ethnic group.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Xiaomi is striving to target the Korean market by releasing various wearable devices following the smartphone’Mi 10 Lite 5G’. However, due to this incident, some domestic netizens are moving to boycott Xiaomi.
