The nationwide courier unions announced a general strike again ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.
[앵커]
It is argued that the countermeasures came out three months ago, but nothing has changed in the field, and overwork is still following.
Let’s listen in detail by connecting with Director Minwook Kang of the courier union. Director, are you with me?
[강민욱]
Good morning.
[앵커]
Let me start with the first question. You have announced a general strike.
Everyone seems to have the same desire to avoid the general strike.
What steps will you go through in the future?
[강민욱]
As for the general strike procedure, we announced a general strike through a press conference today.
Next week, on the 20th and 21st, we will vote for and against all of our courier union members for the industrial action, and after that, we will start a general strike.
The general strike date is scheduled for 27th.
[앵커]
He told me that you are expecting a general strike date on the 27th. But it was last October. There was a strike ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
It seems that there are many people who think that it has been resolved because some measures were taken at that time. How is reality different from the field?
[강민욱]
Before Chuseok last year, couriers announced their countermeasures after we announced that they would refuse to sort.
However, after the announcement of countermeasures against the courier, five courier workers have collapsed, and one of them has died.
So, there is nothing that has changed significantly in the field, I can say that the overworked delivery worker is currently ongoing.
[앵커]
At that time, there was a saying that I would put more people who log in. Was it actually used?
[강민욱]
In the case of Lotte and Hanjin Courier, it can be seen that almost no one was put in.
In the case of Lotte Courier, the management said that 60 people were put in, and in the case of Hanjin Courier, more than 200 people were put in.
[앵커]
So, is the company not keeping what you promised? Has nothing changed at all?
[강민욱]
That’s right. After the announcement of the courier countermeasures mentioned earlier, it was confirmed that no single sorting workforce was put into the site where the five courier workers who fell down worked.
[앵커]
And also, at that time, night delivery was stopped, and wasn’t it included? Are these areas a little improved?
[강민욱]
Rather, that is a more serious situation. In the case of Hanjin Courier, who collapsed on December 22, it was revealed that delivery was delivered by 5 am, 3 pm, and late at 6 am.
However, it is such an ironic situation that Hanjin Courier says that it has stopped late-night delivery after 10 o’clock.
[앵커]
Why have these measures been announced now and a compromise has been reached. Why does the company say that they are not or will not keep them, but is there a blind spot? What do you think is the cause?
[강민욱]
In the end, there is a strong voice urging to improve the treatment of courier workers in society, and courier companies have announced countermeasures against this, but there is no way to enforce this countermeasure.
It’s just a situation where we have to lean on the goodwill of the couriers and hope to keep the announced measures. It seems that the result is actually being seen as a result of the courier overwork.
[앵커]
Last year alone, 16 courier workers died, and in fact, as part of the countermeasures, a social consensus body was created in which the management also participated. Then I wonder if the discussion is not going well.
[강민욱]
That’s right. Social Consensus Organization for Countermeasures against Overworked Death The first topic was about classification.
At the first meeting of the Social Consensus Organization, participants reached consensus on the classification process.
However, as the Integrated Logistics Association, which represents courier companies in the 2nd social consensus organization, unilaterally destroyed the agreement, the current social consensus organization is in danger of being stranded.
[앵커]
You have destroyed it. If so, how do you forecast the process of consensus in the future? Do you think a similar process will be repeated again?
[강민욱]
It’s hard to predict. We think that the courier workers are dying despite the announcement of their countermeasures and are in a dead end in this situation, and as mentioned above, we hope that this will go well with the social consensus organization on the 19th. I think it will not be easy.
[앵커]
In fact, both users and courier workers want to avoid strikes. But what if you get into a general strike?
For example, when you enter, do all the people who join the courier union participate?
[강민욱]
Now it is. It is expected that a total of 5500 members will join together.
[앵커]
Okay. According to what is said now, it seems that about 5,500 people will participate.
[강민욱]
I’m watching it like that. Of course, courier workers who are not affiliated with the union do not participate, and all of our union members are expected to participate.
[앵커]
Okay. In fact, as many of the workers are hiding, we have a feeling of regret, and even though users have a lot of thoughts about reducing their use or being considerate, we are also sorry that these areas have not been improved.
With the hope that there will be no strikes because improvements have been made in the field and an agreement has been reached, I will listen to this story today. Thank you, Director.
[강민욱]
Thank you.
