During a university lecture, the first trial of former Yonsei University professor Ryu Seok-chun, who was accused of defaming the damage of Japanese military comfort women as’a type of prostitution’, took place today.

Prof. Ryu claimed innocence, saying that it was a simple expression of opinion, but the prosecution pointed out that the victims were defamed by false information.

Prof. Ryu, who was present at the trial, denied all the charges?

Yes. The Seoul Western District Court held the first trial of former Yonsei University professor Ryu Seok-chun who is accused of defamation at 11 am today.

Prof. Ryu, who was present at the court, protested that it was impossible in a democratic society to stand in court because a university professor had a discussion with students in front of the reporters.

In the courtroom, the prosecution pointed out that despite the testimony of many comfort women victims not only in Korea but also overseas, the false information was openly indicated and the reputation of the victims was damaged.

In response, Professor Ryu claimed innocence, saying he denied all the charges.

There was a fact that there was a remark to the effect that it was a kind of prostitution over the fact that the comfort women were victimized, but it was a simple expression of opinion, and the content was not false.

He added that he did not recognize that even if it was false, it was false.

Prof. Ryu also admitted that it was true that he made such a statement with the same purpose as the lawyer’s claim, although I do not remember specifically after getting the opportunity to speak.

At the same time, he appealed to the court to recognize that the transcripts that he had said were recorded illegally.

Earlier, on September 19, 2019, Professor Ryu was handed over to court on charges of damaging the honor of the victims of comfort women by remarking that the elderly victims of comfort women in the Japanese military voluntarily became comfort women in order to engage in prostitution at a lecture in the Department of Sociology at Yonsei University on September 19, 2019.

In addition, the Korean Council for Countermeasures against Psychiatric Problems is also accused of defaming the officials of the Jeongdae-hyeop with remarks to the effect of educating comfort women grandmothers to testify as if they were forcibly mobilized by the Japanese military.

The next trial for Prof. Ryu will be held on March 12 at 4 pm in the Western District Court.
