[사회]A courier who died while sleeping…”I worked 15 hours a day, I lost 20kg”

[앵커]

Another courier worker died.

It is the 16th death this year.

The courier union and the bereaved family said that they had suffered from excessive work enough to lose 20kg in 6 months.

Countermeasures have come out to prevent overworking of courier workers, and couriers have also promised to reduce the amount of labor, but voices are high that they are not being kept properly.

Let’s find out more with the reporter. Reporter Kim Ji-hwan!

Another unfortunate death came out, so let’s first explain the death.

[기자]

Yes, it was around 9am yesterday that the 34-year-old LOTTE courier driver, Park Mo, was found dead.

The place where he died was Park’s house in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do.

I didn’t go to work, and I couldn’t get in touch, so a colleague went home and found it.

The police said there were no signs of murder or suicide as a result of investigating the house and building CCTV.

Park is believed to have died while sleeping and is investigating the exact cause and time of death.

[앵커]

The courier union also held a press conference immediately saying that Mr. Park was overworked, right?

[기자]

Yes, it is.

The courier union insisted that Mr. Park was driven into a truly murderous robbery.

He added that he suffered from working for 14 to 15 hours every day, such as going to work at 6 in the morning and usually working until 9-10 at night.

They also said that on average, as many as 380 units per day were delivered.

Park stressed that due to excessive work, she lost 20kg in her new weight in just six months.

Let’s listen to it yourself.

In particular, Lotte Courier promised to inject 1,000 sorting personnel two months ago as a measure to improve the working environment for courier workers.

He criticized that there was not a single classifier at the Sejong agency in Gwonseon, Suwon where Park worked.

[앵커]

YTN also interviewed the bereaved family, and the bereaved also said that Park had a hard time?

[기자]

Yes, Mr. Park’s mother conveyed her heart to YTN.

According to his mother, Park initially worked as a delivery worker to provide food to a restaurant, but he quit after corona 19 made things worse.

The job I got back from last July was a courier driver.

Every time I called, he complained that he had a lot of work, so he said that he was enough to recommend that his family quit.

Let’s listen for a second.

He said there was no chronic disease or pain.

Colleagues gave similar testimony.

In particular, when looking at the SNS messages exchanged with a colleague last week, Mr. Park mentioned that at around 6:30 pm, he is still delivering more than 300 packages today.

A coworker said that the speed was fast, and he said that there are still a hundred left, and that he will be leaving work at 11 pm.

[앵커]

The union, the bereaved family, and even colleagues are saying that they are overworked. What is the position of Lotte Courier?

[기자]

He refuted that it was not overwork.

It was revealed that the delivery volume and the time of departure that the company knows is slightly different from what the union claimed.

First of all, Lotte Courier claimed that Park delivered an average of 200 to 250 units per day from July to this month.

It was a normal workload with no significant difference from other courier drivers.

He said that the contents of the classification personnel are also different from the facts.

In the beginning, it was revealed that the policy was to put 1,000 classified personnel in turn after discussing with the agency council and the union.

He explained that he currently has four or five sorting personnel, and after seeing the results of its operation, he will decide which terminal and how many people to put into it.

In other words, as the union said, it is not that the classification manpower was not put in at all, but it takes time to do it in turn.

He added that as the police decided to autopsy, if the exact cause of death is found, we will provide countermeasures and compensation accordingly.

[앵커]

Sixteen courier workers died this year alone, but the environment has not changed significantly, so voices about the enactment of the courier law are growing?

[기자]

Yes, as the unfortunate deaths of the courier workers continued, what the alternative law is doing, such a voice came out several times.

The Living Logistics Service Industry Development Act, the so-called parcel delivery law, has been proposed three times since the last 20th National Assembly, but once it was abolished.

It was mandated for courier service providers to prevent overwork of courier workers, introduced standard contracts, and installed shelters for workers.

Enactment was not easy as businesses other than courier workers and the cargo delivery industry were also opposed.

In the 21st National Assembly, business operators and cargo delivery companies also favored in turn, increasing the possibility of passing through the temporary National Assembly.

However, in the process of discussing the interests, the contents of the sorting operation are omitted, and the courier worker still has to pay for lost or damaged items.

As the environment does not change easily, there is a voice that the law must be passed even with the proposed content, and the enforcement decree and rules must be further modified.
