Then, we will connect with Professor Um Joong-sik of Gachon University Gil Hospital, a professor of infectious medicine, to learn more about the corona 19 vaccination. Professor Eom, are you with me? Hello?

[엄중식]

Hello?

[앵커]

There were 11 reports of death. Among them, it seems that the results of the first survey were probably about 8 cases. The results of a preliminary investigation have yet to be concluded that there is no connection between getting corona vaccination and death?

[엄중식]

Basically, all of the corona 19 vaccines that are being vaccinated in the field right now are being vaccinated with as much as 230 million cases worldwide, and in fact, no cases of death have been confirmed to be caused by the vaccine. In the case of the United States, about 50 million vaccinations have been made, of which 1,300 are believed to have died after vaccination. In fact, it is said that there is no death from the vaccine itself. In the UK, there are about 400 deaths reported now, but we are now deciding that it was not a vaccine-related death.

Korea is also currently investigating about 10 deaths, and looking at the clinical course of the deceased and the symptoms or signs that occurred after various vaccinations, it is considered that the underlying disease is not caused by the vaccine, but is highly likely to have progressed. Four of them have decided to proceed with an autopsy. So, when the autopsy results come out, it seems that the link between the vaccine and death will be finally confirmed.

[앵커]

If autopsy was done separately for four of those who died, is there any other reason for this?

[엄중식]

Perhaps an autopsy is the most reliable method. So, it is most desirable to do an autopsy to prove that there is no or no relationship between the vaccine and death. However, the autopsy in the end requires the consent of the bereaved family. So, only four people are aware that autopsies are in progress, since it is possible to proceed only if the bereaved family agrees.

[앵커]

And looking at the people who died after vaccination, it was clear that they all suffered from an underlying disease, and it was confirmed that most of them went to a nursing hospital because the underlying disease was actually severe. Because of this, the underlying disease suddenly worsened, is it possible to see it like this?

[엄중식]

When developing the Corona 19 vaccine, it has already been confirmed whether there is any safety problem by inoculating those with such underlying diseases and to the elderly. So, not just very healthy people vaccinated against the COVID-19 vaccine to see the safety, but the elderly people over 60 and 65 years of age were vaccinated enough, and after vaccinating people with various underlying diseases, this vaccine was It has been approved for use after checking if it is causing a problem in humans. As mentioned earlier, in a country where vaccination was started earlier than we actually were, millions of AstraZeneca vaccines were vaccinated. However, in a situation where it is determined that there are no vaccine-related deaths among millions of people, the possibility of vaccination-related deaths in Korea alone is unusual. It’s too low.

[앵커]

Some people even talked about it. It’s pretty painful, and then it’s a little bit sick or dizziness, and these reactions are stronger than expected. Are you going?

[엄중식]

In fact, both the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Pfizer vaccine are made with new technology and are strongly immunogenic, so they are effective in producing antibodies, so these side effects may also have a higher frequency or intensity. However, it is necessary to systematically investigate whether the intensity or frequency of side effects and adverse reactions is actually higher when compared to other vaccines, especially when compared to flu vaccines. In fact, more than 1,600 people have died in Korea now, and most of them are those with underlying diseases, and more than half are those who have died after being in nursing homes and nursing hospitals.

Therefore, in order to reduce such deaths, it is a situation that in the end, people with underlying diseases, as well as those in nursing homes and nursing hospitals, must be actively vaccinated. As mentioned earlier, there have been no reports of deaths due to the exacerbation of the underlying disease because the vaccine currently being vaccinated acts on people with an underlying disease. So, we need to provide a more clear rationale for this part. In particular, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is obligated to present a solid basis through epidemiological investigations. Even so, the possibility is very small in other countries’ precedents, and I don’t think that is the reason for stopping or delaying the vaccination process.

[앵커]

In terms of the number of reports of adverse reactions, some people said that this is reasonable, and some people said that when an adverse reaction occurs, it is more pleasing that the vaccine is working properly on my body. How should I interpret this?

[엄중식]

The occurrence of an adverse reaction does not mean that the antibody is more likely to occur, and the absence of an adverse reaction does not mean that the antibody does not occur. That’s an individual difference. However, it is highly recommended to actively report any adverse reactions. In the process, it is necessary to evaluate the possibility of actually progressing to a serious adverse reaction and receive prompt action. However, of the 4000 adverse reactions reported in Korea, almost 98% of the adverse reactions are very mild, so being mild does not mean that the symptoms are weak or not painful, but are usually not likely to be linked to any serious side effects Is such an adverse reaction that disappears within one to two days, so you don’t need to worry much.

[앵커]

Okay. And when the two nurses said they were confirmed after vaccination, everyone was confused whether it was saying that they received the vaccination after they got it or that they were infected before the vaccination was effective. Are you more likely to be infected before the vaccination?

[엄중식]

In fact, it is difficult to determine whether before or after vaccination. Both are possible. What’s important is that even if we get the vaccine, antibodies will form about 2 weeks from the time of vaccination. So, if you are exposed to any infectious agent within two weeks of vaccination, before antibodies are formed, you can become infected. So even after vaccination, you still have to wear a mask or follow personal quarantine rules well for at least 2 weeks, and there may be a few people who do not actually produce antibodies after vaccination. It is necessary to adhere well.

[앵커]

Yesterday, I heard that vaccine experts, including the professor, gathered at the clubhouse to discuss the various information that the professor posts through social media. What were your main discussions?

[엄중식]

Mainly, side effects of vaccines, adverse reactions and effects, and how the vaccine policy in Korea should be connected in the future, and points to be wary of in the press release. Experienced.

[앵커]

Okay. I hope that you will continue to tell us what was discussed at the clubhouse in the future.

Joong-Sik Um, Professor of Infectious Diseases at Gachon University Gil Hospital, I’ll listen to you today.

[엄중식]

Thank you.
