On the 23rd, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the world’s first’Ioniq 5′, the first model of the exclusive electric vehicle brand Ioniq. ‘Ioniq 5′, the first application of the electric vehicle platform’E-GMP’, is being evaluated as Hyundai Motor’s ambitious work to dominate the global electric vehicle market.

The IONIC 5 is an intermediate form between a hatchback and a sports utility vehicle (SUV), and without an engine and transmission, the wheelbase (distance between the front and rear wheel axles) reaches 3000mm. This is 100mm longer than the Palisade wheelbase, which is a large SUV, allowing customers to use the space inside the vehicle in a variety of ways.

For the first time, a camera was mounted instead of a side mirror. In addition, a buried door handle is applied for the first time, responding to smart. Based on the long-range all-wheel drive model, the time from stop to 100 km/h is 5.2 seconds.

Many of the latest driving assistance systems are also installed. Safety and convenience are secured by installing Forward Collision Avoidance Assistance (FCA) that automatically assists in avoidance steering when a risk of collision is detected, as well as △ Highway Driving Assistance 2 (HDA 2) △ Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC). .

The design is also noteworthy. The exterior design of the IONIQ 5 inherits the first model of Hyundai Motor Company,’Pony’. Just as Pony was an icon that marked the beginning of the Korean automobile industry, Ioniq 5, which contains Pony’s spirit of challenge, is also the first dedicated electric car, with the meaning of leading a new electric car era. Lee Sang-yeop, executive director of Hyundai Design, explained, “It was inspired by Pony, but it is a completely new type of vehicle.”

Ionic 5 is available in two models: long range (72.6kWh battery) and standard (58.0kWh). The maximum driving distance per charge is 410~430km (based on Hyundai Motor’s measurement) for long-range rear-wheel drive models. 80% of the battery capacity can be charged within 18 minutes by charging at the super-fast 350㎾ class, and driving up to 100km is possible with a 5-minute charge.

The price was set at the beginning of 50 million won for exclusive and mid 50 million won for prestige. Above all, if the individual consumption tax benefits applied to electric vehicles (up to 3 million won) and purchase subsidy (12 million won, based on Seoul City) are reflected, it is expected that the Long Range Exclusive Trim can be purchased at an amount in the upper 30 million won range.

Hyundai Motor Company has set the domestic sales target of Ioniq 5 to 26,500 units. It will start mass production in earnest at the Ulsan plant next month, and it plans to have a production system of 70,000 units this year and 100,000 units annually from next year. Jae-hoon Jang, president of Hyundai Motor Company, said, “Hyundai Motor will establish itself as a top-tier brand leading the global electric vehicle market through Ioniq 5.” Hyundai Motor Company plans to launch the Ioniq 5 in Korea, starting with Europe, the US, and other general regions within this year.

With the launch of Hyundai Motor Company’s Ioniq 5, competition in the global electric vehicle market is expected to intensify. In particular, the head-to-head match against Tesla, which dominates the global electric vehicle market, is expected to develop fiercely.

In the automobile industry, Ioniq 5 is expected to target the market between Tesla’s’Model 3’and’Model Y’.

First of all, it is an evaluation that Tesla is ahead in terms of mileage. In fact, Tesla’s’Model 3’long-range model has a driving distance of 496km, 70km than the Ionik 5, and the’Model Y’long-range model is 511km, which is 81km longer than the Ionik 5.

In addition to mileage, in terms of price and indoor space utilization, Ioniq 5 has a comparative advantage. In the case of Tesla,’Model 3’costs 5479~74.79 million won, and’Model Y’costs 59.99 to 79,000 won. On the other hand, in the case of Ioniq 5, which was priced in the early and mid-range 50 million won, if you add individual consumption tax benefits and purchase subsidies, you can actually purchase the price at the end of the 30 million won range.

It is also a good news that Tesla’s recently introduced’Model Y’has stopped selling the standard range. This is because Ionic 5’s price competitiveness can be further highlighted. There is also a prospect in the industry that Tesla will not resume orders for the model.

In terms of space utilization,’Ioniq 5’is evaluated as having the upper hand. The Ioniq 5 is an intermediate form between a hatchback and an SUV and has a larger body than expected, so it has excellent space utilization compared to the sedan Model 3.

Kim Jin-woo, a researcher at Korea Investment & Securities Co., said, “The vehicle body is larger than expected, so it will target the market between Tesla’s’Model 3’and’Model Y’. It is expected, and with Ioniq 5, the global electric vehicle market has started in earnest.” He added, “We will target consumers who value indoor space and convenience functions compared to competitors.”
