[뒷북비즈]’The power of K-semiconductor’ to dominate the global DRAM market… Samsung SK, 72% market share

1Q DRAM price to rise

In the fourth quarter of last year, it was found that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accounted for more than 70% of the global DRAM market. Even in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), Korean companies have maintained the status of’K-semiconductor’.

According to Trend Force, a market research firm on the 5th, the total sales of global DRAM manufacturers in the fourth quarter of 2020 was about $17.652 billion (about KRW 19.85 trillion), an increase of 1.1% from the previous quarter. Trend Force said, “At the end of last year, Micron’s fab power failure and major data center customers’ server DRAM inventory adjustments resulted in a decrease in demand. I did.

Of these, Samsung Electronics, which has maintained the No. 1 position in the DRAM market for 28 consecutive years, has surpassed competitors with a 42.1% market share, while SK Hynix has also increased its market share to close to 30% in the fourth quarter of last year. As a result, the sales portion of Korean DRAM makers has reached almost 72%. It was found that in the fourth quarter of last year, Samsung Electronics recorded sales of $7.44 billion, an increase of 3.1% compared to the previous quarter.

SK hynix ranked second with sales of 5.2 billion dollars. SK hynix’s sales in the fourth quarter of last year increased by 5.6% compared to the previous quarter, and the market share based on sales was 29.5%, up 1.3 percentage points from the previous quarter, reaching nearly 30%. The share of the DRAM market, plus the share of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, was 71.6% as of the fourth quarter of last year, up 2.1 percentage points from the previous quarter.

On the other hand, Micron of the U.S., which ranked third, saw sales of about $4,056 million, down 7.2% from the previous quarter. The market share fell 2 percentage points to 23%. Trend Force explained this as “the effect of the power outage and the number of working days in the fourth quarter of last year less than that of the third quarter.”

However, in terms of’operating margin’, which shows profitability, all so-called’Dram Big 3’companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron have stepped back.

Trend Force predicts that the price of DRAM will rise from the first quarter of this year. The report explained that “the demand for PC, mobile, graphic, consumer DRAM, etc. is still solid in the first quarter, and major companies are starting to repurchase in the server field as well, and DRAM prices are rising from the first quarter.”

However, considering that the price increase is currently in the entry stage, and considering the seasonal off-peak season, he predicted that DRAM sales in the first quarter of this year will only increase slightly from the fourth quarter of last year.
