Amid the growing opinion of the police that failed to prevent Jung In-yang’s death even after receiving reports of suspected child abuse three times, a civic group called for a re-investigation and accused the chief of the Yangcheon Police Department, who was excluded from disciplinary action.

According to law enforcement officials on the 6th, the Civil Organization’s Committee for the Countermeasures for Common People’s Lives (the common people’s committee) accused Yangcheon Police Chief Lee Hwa-seop of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutor’s Office on charges of abandonment of work. “The accused (Lee Hwa-seop Yangcheon Chief) was abandoned by his duty of care as a manager, such as neglect of supervision of the staff, and abandonment of his duties. Jeong In-i was adopted by her adoptive parents in January of last year, but was continuously abused and died 16 months after birth in a hospital in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu. The police received reports of suspicion of abuse three times before Jeong In-i’s death, but closed the case because there was no evidence at the time of the report, or sent the case to the prosecution as a non-prosecution.
