“After vaccination, just rubbing the left arm will hurt”

“For two days, I had pain in my left arm and my colleague had a mild fever.”

“My colleague with a slight fever…it gets better after two days”

This is a body reaction after vaccination against the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), which was reported on the 12th by A, an employee of the US military unit in the Gyeongbuk region.

On the 4th, he was vaccinated with the Corona 19 vaccine’Modena’ at the hospital in the US military base in Waegwan, Chilgok. Although they are Korean, they first received the Corona 19 vaccine for the US military vaccination, which was airlifted from the United States to Korea. He said, “7~8 Korean colleagues vaccinated the same day together,” he said. “Everyone said it was like a strong shot different from the flu shot.”

The following are questions and answers with Mr. A.

How to get the vaccine (Modena).
“I was inoculated right under the shoulder of the left arm. I inject about 0.5cc of liquid, but I have to do the second vaccination 29 days after the first vaccination. The injection method is the same as the regular flu vaccination.”

Whether there were any abnormal symptoms in the body after vaccination.
“It was a little difficult. I had pain in my left arm where I got the injection. It feels like muscle pain. It hurts even if I rubbed that part (skin). I didn’t have a fever, but some of my colleagues who got the vaccine said that I had a mild fever.”

Doesn’t it cause a problem if you have a fever?
“Before vaccination, the medical staff tells me that’you may have a mild fever.’ If you have a fever, they say that you take’geborin (antipyretic)’. So even if you have a fever, everyone wasn’t surprised.”

“Two vaccinations…the second vaccination will be in 29 days”

How long does the pain last?
“After about two days, the pain in my left arm disappeared. A colleague’s mild fever disappeared after two days. It seems like two days are the period when symptoms disappear after the vaccination. Some of my colleagues who received the vaccine were in their 30s, 40s, and 60s. I haven’t heard of any health problems until now after vaccination.”

Did all the Koreans working in the unit get the vaccine?
“At first, everyone was afraid of vaccination itself, so there were many sayings that they would not be correct. After that, they met one by one, and now it seems that more than 80% of them have been vaccinated. Not all of them are vaccinated like the US military, but Korean employees only vaccinate applicants.”

Are there any special vaccination procedures?
“The entire vaccination process is tricky unlike regular flu shots. It takes time. We survey the body to see if there is anything wrong, and it also announces in advance, such as,’You may have a mild fever.’ It seems to be more careful because it is a sensitive vaccine. That’s why it seemed that a separate team was set up on the side of the US military that only vaccinated them.”

Experts, “Normal Immune Response”

Experts view it as a “normal reaction” to Mr. A’s experience after vaccination, such as arm pain and mild fever.

Kim Shin-woo, a professor of infectious medicine at Kyungpook National University, said, “Arm pain, mild fever, etc. are like normal immune reactions.” “When a foreign substance enters our body, the body reacts to it. If the reaction does not come out (even though the vaccine was inoculated), the effect should be questioned. I wonder if there is an opinion to come out.”

“It is likely to be a general discomfort that appears at the beginning of the vaccination,” said Min Bok-ki, head of the Daegu City Medical Association’s Corona 19 countermeasures. “It would be better to avoid excessive worries (about vaccines).” In addition, Min said, “It seems that the Korean government should also make more precise vaccination plans by looking at the situation of other countries that have been vaccinated in advance.”

President Moon Jae-in said on the 11th that “from next month we will get the corona 19 vaccine free for all the people.” Modena, which Mr. A vaccinated, is also included in the free vaccine. The government is currently working on a specific plan to determine where and in what order the priority target for vaccination will be.
