[단독]]’Hyundai Motor will grow electric vehicle parts suppliers’…First selected as Sebang Battery

Dedicated supply battery pack for Hyundai Mobis
Diversification into Sebang Battery as a primary partner
Secondary outsourcing company also selected within the year
Expected to deliver hundreds of thousands of units next year

Hyundai Motor Group is expanding the supply of battery packs for electric vehicles, which Hyundai Mobis has been dedicated to, to other partners.

This is to induce changes in the constitution of existing internal combustion engine parts suppliers in line with the era of electrification, which cannot be handled by Hyundai Mobis alone due to the expansion of the electric vehicle market. A change in the domestic parts industry ecosystem centered on existing internal combustion engines is expected due to the shift in the era of electrification such as electric vehicles.

According to the industry on the 22nd, Hyundai Motor Group recently selected Sebang Battery as a company that manufactures and produces battery packs for electric vehicles for primary partners.

The Hyundai Motor Group has been supplying large-capacity battery modules and packs for electric vehicles produced by HL Green Power, a joint venture between Hyundai Mobis and LG Energy Solutions, only through Hyundai Mobis. This is the first time that a supplier has been given the battery pack supply business, which has the largest proportion of electric vehicle parts in price. It contains a win-win strategy to lead change with partners in line with the transition to electrification.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to select additional secondary battery pack outsourcing companies within this year. A number of companies, such as Incogni Controls, an internal combustion engine parts maker such as engine temperature control system, and Sambo Motors, an automatic transmission parts company, are known as candidates for the selection of secondary companies. The supply of battery pack subcontractors including Sebang Battery is expected to start at tens of thousands of units this year and increase to hundreds of thousands from next year.

The existing core business of Sebang Battery, which was first selected as a battery pack supplier, was a lead acid battery for starting a brand called’ROCKET’. In the future, it will manufacture and produce a high-capacity driving battery system including modules and packs based on lithium-ion secondary batteries.

Sebang Lithium Battery, which is already a subsidiary of Sebang Battery, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 30,000m2 battery module and pack production plant with a budget of 151 billion won in Pyeongdong Industrial Complex in Gwangju earlier this month. Production begins in the second half of this year.

A supplier official said, “The selection of suppliers of battery modules and packs, which are core parts of electric vehicles, has a strategy to diversify suppliers, but it has a greater meaning to induce changes in the electric vehicle era of existing suppliers.” It will be expanded to the entire ecosystem of parts, including various secondary and tertiary partners.”

The Hyundai Motor Group is planning to actively provide financial support as well as creating jobs to induce conversion of electric parts. This is because the overall role of the ecosystem, including existing parts suppliers, is large to secure competitiveness for electrified future vehicles.

An official of the Hyundai Motor Group said, “The successful entry of auto parts companies into the future car industry is not a mere survival dimension of individual companies, but it is determining the overall competitiveness of the domestic future car industry.” It is expected that it will be a stepping stone for parts makers to prepare for the electrification and autonomous vehicle parts industry.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company plans to increase the proportion of electric vehicle sales in the global market by 10% by launching a total of 12 electric vehicles by 2025 and selling 560,000 units per year. Kia is also planning to launch 7 exclusive electric vehicles by 2026 and build a full lineup of 11 electric vehicles along with 4 derivative electric vehicles.
