According to GS Retail on the 3rd, from this day on, GS The Fresh (supermarket) has decided to completely ban the sale of squid less than 15cm in coats (head to mouth length, excluding legs) in stores.
The length of the squid fishing ban is 15cm, and distribution is allowed as an exception if caught during the fishing process. The young squid caught in this way ran in the process of purchasing the product and was sold at the store, but I decided to get it off the counter.
In addition, GS Retail decided not to purchase young squid at all by strengthening monitoring in advance. While buying squid from the production area, it plans to filter all of the coats less than 15 cm long. Proactive response can preemptively protect young squids rather than follow up. However, it was decided not to classify and sell young squid that could not be filtered in this process.
In the future, it was decided to expand the target young fish and refine the purchase process and sales process. In this context, it plans to expand the purchase of eco-friendly fish. To this end, we decided to strengthen our relationship with companies that have obtained the ASC COC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council-Chain of Custody) certification, which is given to’good food’ seafood.
GS Retail’s decision is evaluated as contributing to stability in the fishery ecosystem and ultimately in conformity with ESG (environment, society, and governance).
A GS Retail official said, “We decided that if our sales method changed, the number of squid populations would recover in the long term and fishery resources would be protected.” I will do my best.”
