[이데일리 김호준 기자] It has been confirmed that a syringe for corona 19 vaccination by a small and medium-sized medical device company in Korea that successfully mass-produced with the help of the government and Samsung Electronics has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As countries around the world have started vaccination against Corona 19, exports of domestic vaccine syringes are also expected to gain momentum.

Poonglim Pharmatech announced on the 17th that “The minimum injection residual quantity (LDS) syringe developed by the company has received FDA approval.”

Poonglim Pharmatech’s LDS syringe is characterized by minimizing the amount of vaccine left in the syringe when the drug is administered. The amount of remaining injections per minute is more than 84 microliters (μL) in the general syringe, but the injection of Poonglim was minimized to 4 μL. For this reason, only 5 doses (persons) per bottle of Corona 19 vaccine can be inoculated with a regular syringe, but more than 6 doses (persons) per bottle using Poonglim LDS syringe are possible. This means that the use of this syringe will increase the production of the Corona 19 vaccine by 20%.

Poonglim’s LDS syringe has also met the performance requirements of the Corona 19 vaccine pharmaceutical company, such as passing performance tests such as the minimum injection remaining amount of a US pharmaceutical company. In addition, it has applied for domestic technology patents and design patents related to the minimum injection amount and safety protection guard, and is also applying for international patents such as the United States and the European Union (EU).

Earlier, Samsung Electronics and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups supported Poonglim Pharmatech to build a smart factory to mass-produce LDS syringes. Samsung Electronics added more than 30 experts in its own manufacturing to improve the productivity of syringe injection by 5 times and also supported the automatic syringe assembly facility. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance quickly helped in terms of administration and funding through fast track procedures for quarantine items and a loan program exclusively for smart factories in the financial sector. As a result, Poonglim Pharmatech’s syringe production increased 2.5 times from 4 million to 10 million per month.

According to the FDA approval, Poonglim Pharmatech plans to actively promote overseas export of LDS syringes. Currently, major corona19 vaccine pharmaceutical companies such as the United States and the European Union (EU) are supplying vaccine syringes together with the vaccine. It is said that orders for syringes are already coming from overseas countries such as the United States and Japan.

Previously, former Minister of Medium and Medium Business Park Young-seon announced that he had made a call with Poonglim Pharmatech at the’Seol Minshim Press Conference’ held at the National Assembly on the 14th. . He said, “I want to send 75 million pieces in Japan.”

As countries around the world start vaccinating against Corona 19, it is expected to be able to respond to the increased demand for syringes. Recently, in Japan, there was a report that the Ministry of Health and Welfare was on the brink of discarding 12 million doses of the vaccine because it was unable to secure a special syringe necessary for Pfizer’s Corona 19 vaccination.

An official of Poonglim Pharmatech said, “There is a lot of demand for vaccine syringes around the world, but it is meaningful that we can contribute to this (with FDA approval). I said.

An official from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said, “Unlike the syringe crisis in Japan in the face of vaccination, Korea is fully preparing with the power of SMEs.” I proved that I stood tall.”
