[단독] Set up a Naver Algorithm Verification Organization

Naver forms a committee to publicly verify news algorithms.

As a result of Media Today’s confirmation, Naver plans to regularly form a’News Algorithm Review Committee’, which is publicly verified by experts on the arrangement principle, method, and influence of the news algorithm AiRS.

Naver recommends artificial intelligence, not humans, for mobile news arrangements. News algorithm Airs analyzes users’ article preferences and quality of each article, and prioritizes articles with high scores as a result of predicting.

As a result of analyzing the Naver News algorithm on the 7th, MBC’Straight’ reported that it recommended it mainly to conservative media, and disputes continued in the politics. Naver does not categorize or treat specific political tendencies, and non-login users are exposed to the media with a large number of subscribers. Inside and outside the media world, it is also pointed out that after Naver introduced an algorithmic news arrangement, articles focused on online issues rather than high-quality articles have received more attention.

Naver seems to be responding to such concerns and controversies through public verification.

This is not the first time that Naver’s news algorithm has been publicly verified. Earlier in 2018, Naver operated the’Algorithm Review Committee’ to verify news algorithms. In 2018, the Review Committee composed of 11 experts in three fields: computer science, information science, and communication (press), analyzed the algorithm for 6 months, and then released the results.

At the time, there was a great concern about artificial intervention in news algorithms and’filter bubbles’ which encouraged news consumption according to taste. The Review Committee commented that the Naver News algorithm is an automated structure that cannot be artificially intervened, and that it is minimizing filter bubbles by recommending articles that are not of interest. It also revealed that a comparison of the Airs algorithm articles and human-arranged articles confirmed that it does not limit the chances of accessing articles from various perspectives and articles written by various media outlets.

At present, concerns about the Naver News algorithm causing’filter bubble’ have diminished. During this review, articles from various media and whether high-quality articles are recommended are likely to be discussed in earnest.
