It was confirmed that there is a high possibility of a’DDoS attack’ as the cause of the service failure of Naver, the number one internet portal in Korea.

An official from the Ministry of Science and Technology and Information and Communication said in a call with JoongAng Ilbo on the afternoon of the 24th, “I contacted Naver to confirm that an attack presumed to be DDoS has occurred.” It is necessary to further check whether it is an attack of the company, such as analyzing log records.”

DDoS is a hacking attack that paralyzes one target system by generating massive traffic at the same time. By remotely controlling as few as dozens to as many as millions of PCs, they simultaneously access a specific website and overload in a short time. DDoS attacks occurred several times in the financial sector last year, causing damage such as server paralysis and personal information leakage.

On this afternoon, some service pages such as Naver News, blogs, and cafes caused access problems, causing users to experience inconvenience. Naver said that from 5:26 p.m. on the day, some service failures occurred and emergency restoration was performed. According to users, Naver news, cafes, and blogs were connected and disconnected on mobile and PC. Even if the connection is successful after several attempts, it was displayed that there was no corresponding content, or the speed was very slow, so it was practically difficult to use.

A Naver official said, “Emergency recovery from the blog was carried out, and recovery was sequentially completed around 6:5 pm.”

This is not the first time that Naver’s service failure occurred, but it occurred a day after the Google Android app was stopped running the day before, causing inconvenience to users. The day before, Google experienced the inconvenience of stopping the smartphone app for about 7 hours after recognizing the Android app crashing around 8 am.

On the same day, at 3:18 pm, the Google side belatedly announced that, “If you update the web view and Chrome to the latest version on the Play Store, the app crash problem will disappear”, raising controversy.

An official from the Ministry of Science and Technology said on the day about the Naver service failure, “If it is confirmed that it is a cyber attack such as DDoS, the cause will be investigated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and measures will be taken to prevent recurrence.”

Meanwhile, Naver was attacked by DDoS with the government and financial institutions for three days from July 7, 2009, and then, on March 4, 2011, launched a DDoS attack with more than 40 major sites nationwide, including the Blue House, the National Assembly, and the National Intelligence Service. There has been a service failure.
