Kia is stepping up to strengthen the purpose-based mobility (PBV) business with a taxi-only electric vehicle.

According to related industries on the 19th, Kia plans to launch an electric car for taxis based on the Niro in the first half of next year.

PBV (Purpose Built Vehicle) refers to mobility that changes in various shapes and functions depending on the purpose. If the technology is advanced, the vehicle can develop into an era of autonomous driving in which a large number of people are driven by themselves.

Kia plans to apply driver convenience specifications and integrated management system to electric vehicles exclusively for taxis. In particular, the interior design differentiated from existing Niro electric vehicles improves interior space and openness.

From the beginning of this year, Kia has been trying to enter various mobility businesses, moving away from simple automobile manufacturing companies by changing the company name and changing the symbol. It was also early this year that they expressed their will to strengthen PBV capabilities.

The Niro-based taxi-only electric car is highly likely to be the first player in the Kia PBV business.

The reason Kia started developing electric vehicles for taxis is because of the changes in the taxi market. As brand taxis such as Kakao T, Macaron Taxi, Banban Taxi, Bugsi, Papa, and Jin Mobility are actively engaged in business in Korea, the existing LPG sedan-centered taxi market is expanding to various types such as Carnival and Niro electric cars.
