In connection with the online game’Mabinogi probability manipulation suspicion,’ Nexon, who said, “We cannot disclose the probability of (drawing-type items),” has been confirmed to be receiving’probability disclosure certification’ from the Korea Game Policy Authority (GSOK) every year. Externally, while emphasizing transparent management, criticism is rising that it is taking huge profits through’probability manipulation’.

The’self-regulatory certification mark’ is a system in which GSOK gives a mark through verification when a game company voluntarily applies for certification that the’probability of acquisition’ of a’probability type item’ is transparently disclosed. Faced with criticism that “a draw-type item whose acquisition probability is unknown is no different from speculative gambling,” game companies launched GSOK in 2018. GSOK is carrying out a project to give certification marks to game companies that meet certain requirements through self-deliberation.

The GSOK certification mark in the market tends to be accepted as a symbol of transparent management of game companies. In other words, it is functioning as a mark recognized by an accredited institution that transparently discloses the problem’probability of obtaining a draw type item’.

Boundary between gambling and games’drawable items’

A’drawable item’ can be said to be a kind of material used to reinforce the stats of items (eg, execution swords) that appear in MMORPG games such as Mabinogi. Although different for each game company, these materials are usually expressed in jewels (ruby, crystal). In order to reinforce an item, the’combination’ of the subsidiary material and the item must be achieved, and a third material (reinforcement catalyst) that helps’combination’ also exists. Subsidiary materials and reinforcing catalysts are called’probability-type items’ or’draw-type items’ for convenience.

The problem is that whether or not to acquire a draw-type item, which is essential for reinforcing the item, is thoroughly determined as’random’. The fact that the probability of acquiring these items is determined by randomness also means that the game company can adjust the probability. Moreover, game companies are extremely reluctant to disclose the same probability. This is why there are criticisms that game companies are mass-producing draw-type items using the psychology of users and taking enormous unfair benefits.

GSOK was created by game companies as a result of’refusal to disclose the acquisition probability of draw-type i-team’ as a social issue. The purpose of the organization’s launch is to solve the problem of’probability of obtaining draw-type items’ by the industry. However, contrary to the purpose, there is constant criticism that the certification mark business is being abused as a’indulgence’ for game companies. In that the performance option of the item is determined as’random’, the’crafting system’ can also be said to be a type of draw type item described above. Users repeat the combination to obtain performance options optimized for their character, and at this time, they spend tens of thousands of won as little as tens of thousands of won. Currently, advanced crafting tools are sold for 1,200 won (10,000 won for purchasing 10), and credne (a tool that gives you a better option than advanced crafting) crafting tools are sold for 3,600 won.

In this situation, Nexon Maminogi had a case in which some of the draw-type items with high preference were’disappeared’, leading to a decline in confidence in the game.

Mabinogi users raised questions to Nexon, complaining that “some items of random performance options cannot be obtained no matter how much money you invest.” For example, among gauntlet items,’windbreaker duration’ and’ice attribute’ of bow items are representative. At first, Nexon urged, “There is no problem with the probability,” but it was explained as a’bug’ after a few months. Nexon explained that some items were missing due to a’system error’ (bug).

Users were upset with Nexon’s attitude for blaming’bugs’. The backlash from users is being expressed in the real world beyond the game world. ‘Mabinogi’ users sent a’protest truck’ to Nexon headquarters on the 5th of this month. Users are in a position to disclose the probability of crafting according to the GSOK certification system. We tried to contact Nexon several times in connection with this controversy, but did not receive a reply.
