Total project cost estimated at KRW 1.54 trillion

The plan to connect Daejeon Metro Line 1 to the Government Complex Sejong is expected to be included in the ‘4th National Rail Network Construction Plan’ to be announced in June. The national rail network construction plan, which is announced once every five years, is a’railway blueprint’ that contains the rail network plan from 2021 to 2030, and each local government is putting its life and death to include local long-awaited projects in this plan.

A government official said on the 13th, “Due to the large number of people commuting to Daejeon and Sejong, the Sejong extension project for Daejeon Line 1 will be included in this national rail network construction plan.” An official from Sejong City also said, “Whenever there is an opportunity, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has suggested extending Daejeon Line 1 to Sejong City. If it is decided to be included in the national rail network construction plan in the first half of the year, this project will be reflected in the city budget.” said.

The Daejeon Line 1 Sejong Connection Project is a 14.02km railroad construction project connecting Banseok Station to the Government Complex Sejong. It is expected that a total of five stations will be installed, including ▲Oesam Station ▲Geumnam Station ▲Sejong Terminal Station ▲Naseong Station ▲Government Sejong Station. According to the results of the feasibility study ordered by Sejong City, the time required for the extended section (Banseok-Government Sejong Complex) was analyzed to be around 16 minutes.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “If the Daejeon Line 1 extension project is reflected in the national rail network construction plan, government funding will be supported and a preliminary feasibility study will begin.” If the Daejeon Line 1 Sejong connection project is reflected in the national rail network construction plan, the two local governments only need to bear 30% of the total construction cost. The remaining 70% will be invested in government expenses.

According to the results of a feasibility study ordered by Daejeon Metropolitan City and Sejong City, the projected project cost totaled KRW 1.54 trillion. Of the 3164 billion won in local expenses, the section of Sejong City is about 74%, or 10.32km, and Sejong City plans to pay 232.9 billion won.

Two local governments in Daejeon and Sejong were putting their lives and deaths on reflecting the Sejong City extension project of Daejeon Line 1 in the national rail network construction plan. The national rail network construction plan is the highest legal plan in the railroad sector, and is announced once every five years. This is because if this opportunity is missed, Daejeon City and Sejong City will have to wait five years until the next construction plan, and the time of completion of the route will double. Not only Daejeon City and Sejong City, but also local governments across the country are taking their lives and deaths to reflect the long-awaited railroad project.

Sejong Mayor Lee Chun-hee and Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong signed a win-win cooperation agreement between Sejong and Daejeon in November last year, focusing on the Sejong connection project for Daejeon Metro Line 1. In addition to this, the plan is to extend Daejeon Line 1 to the Government Complex Sejong, in addition to Chungbuk Province, and Cheongju will follow this railroad through Cheongju city center and connect to Cheongju Airport.

Sejong City is also promoting the introduction of the’ITX Sejong Line’ that goes to and from Seoul and the Government Complex Sejong. It is a route that allows you to reach Seoul Station in about 70 minutes without a separate transfer. Currently, when traveling between Seoul and Sejong, you need to take a bus from Seoul Station to Osong Station and then to Osong Station to enter the Government Complex Sejong.

In addition to the previous mention of the administrative capital, as discussions on the extension of Daejeon Line 1 spurred last year, house prices in Sejong City jumped hotly. According to Real Estate 114, the sale price of apartments in Sejong City rose 42.81% last year, exceeding the national average of 13.81%.
