“The future of the hydrogen economy is a path no one has ever been to.” The government will provide a budget of 8244 billion won this year to advance the era of the hydrogen economy. This is an increase of 40% compared to last year. It is interpreted as a total support for five domestic groups, including SK, Hyundai Motors, POSCO, Hanwha, and Hyosung, to invest 43.4 trillion won in hydrogen business.

Earlier, the government started operating the Hydrogen Economy Committee, which was launched in July last year, as the world’s first ‘Hydrogen Act (Act on Hydrogen Economy Promotion and Hydrogen Safety Management)’ came into effect on the 5th of last month. The Hydrogen Economy Committee, headed by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun and with eight ministers from related ministries, serves as a pan-government hydrogen economy control tower.

The government plans to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen economy by cooperating with businesses and the public, led by the committee. Ultimately, through this, the company plans to realize so-called’carbon neutral’, which makes the real emissions of greenhouse gases’zero’ by 2050.

Prime Minister Chung presided over the 3rd Hydrogen Economy Committee at SK Incheon Petrochemical in Seo-gu, Incheon on the afternoon of the 2nd, and introduced government support plans to revitalize the hydrogen economy. Hyundai Motor Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun and SK Chairman Choi Tae-won also attended the meeting.

At this meeting, Prime Minister Chung said, “Hydrogen, which has stayed in the laboratory so far, has prepared a hydrogen economy investment plan worth 43 trillion won by 2030 for hydrogen production, fuel cells, mobility, etc.” by companies in various fields such as domestic energy, steel, chemicals, and automobiles. Will be an inflection point toward the mainstream of the market economy.”

He said, “As our companies have invested with their lives and deaths, the government will do its best to ensure that the investment plans of the companies are realized.”

Specifically, the government has set up investment plans such as △366.5 billion won in subsidy for the purchase of hydrogen cars and buses △66.6 billion won for hydrogen production base construction △81.6 billion won for hydrogen and fuel cell core technology development △10 billion won for green hydrogen technology development.

As for corporate support, △Introduction of clean hydrogen certification system △Preparation of safety standards for liquefied hydrogen △Introduction of mandatory hydrogen power generation system (HPS) △Technology development support for hydrogen turbine and hydrogen reduction steel is under consideration.

Prime Minister Chung also said, “Investment in liquefied hydrogen is an essential investment to supply cheap hydrogen, which is the basis of the hydrogen economy.”

The government also has detailed strategies such as applying for a preliminary feasibility study to create regional-specific integrated complexes such as bio, green hydrogen, mobility, fuel cells, and liquefied hydrogen in five regions including Incheon, Jeonbuk, Ulsan, Gyeongbuk, and Gangwon. I decided to arrange it. Through this, we plan to explore ways to build a self-sustaining hydrogen ecosystem with the region.

Prime Minister Chung said, “The private sector cannot do it alone, and the government cannot do it alone.” I look forward to it.”

After the committee, Prime Minister Chung also attended the’Incheon Hydrogen Industry Base Construction MOU Signing Ceremony’. SK E&S, Hyundai Motor Company, Incheon Metropolitan City, and Incheon Metropolitan City’s Seo-gu Office decided to actively cooperate so that Incheon can be reborn as a bio-by-product hydrogen production cluster in the future through this MOU.

In particular, SK plans to build a liquefied hydrogen production and shipping facility capable of producing 30,000 tons of hydrogen per year, the world’s largest, and will supply safe and cheap hydrogen to 200,000 hydrogen cars in the metropolitan area such as Seoul and Incheon from 2023. .

The government is also planning to increase the number of charging stations nationwide (currently 73 units) and metropolitan areas (currently 17 units) to more than 180 and more than 50 units, respectively, by the end of the year to solve the problem of shortage of hydrogen charging stations.

In addition, a hydrogen experience museum will be built near the Sangam hydrogen charging station in Mapo-gu, Seoul. It is intended to promote and educate the environment and safety of hydrogen.

On that day, Prime Minister Chung also inspected the planned site for a liquefied hydrogen plant and petrochemical plants that SK is promoting.
