[기상센터]Heavy snowfall in March after 16 years… fishing boats also sunk due to heavy wet snow

It has been 16 years since 2005 that such heavy snow fell in March, when spring begins.

In particular, fishing boats sank as heavy’wet snow’ poured out due to moisture.

The place where the most snow falls is in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do.

Over 90cm of snow accumulated in Misiryeong and over 70cm in Seorak-dong.

There has been a lot of snow over 30cm in the city center, and especially Bukgangneung has set the most snowfall record since 2008 when observation began.

According to the analysis of the Korea Meteorological Administration, it has snowed the most in 16 years since 2005.

The warm, humid air from the southwest was supplied to the Yeongdong region, which was the first cause of heavy snowfall.

Here, cold air came from the northeast, and snow clouds were created by the temperature difference, and these clouds developed explosively as they climbed up the Taebaek Mountains by the east wind and poured snow bombs.

Wet snow filled with moisture weighs two to three times more than normal snow.

Because of this, damage to facilities such as the collapse of green houses occurs one after another, and the sinking of a 1.02-ton class fishing boat at Daepo Port in Sokcho is also attributed to snow.

The last snowfall in the Yeongdong region was on May 17th based on Daegwallyeong,

Most recently, snow was observed on May 6, 2014.

Especially this weekend and holidays, there is a lot of snow forecast in the Yeongdong region, so be careful.
