[국제]US, coronavirus death toll exceeds 500,000…Biden orders early hoisting

[앵커]

With the cumulative death toll of Corona 19 in the United States surpassing 500,000, President Biden ordered all federal agencies to hoist early in memory of the victims.

Major European countries, which are accelerating vaccination, are preparing to ease the blockade, allowing them to attend school starting next month.

Let’s talk in detail with reporter Kim Hyeong-geun of the International Department.

Corona 19 is the most serious place in the United States, and the death toll accounts for 1/5 of the cumulative deaths worldwide

[기자]

That’s right.

The cumulative death toll in the United States surpassed 500,000 in our time by World Om yesterday and by Johns Hopkins today.

The difference between the two statistics is due to the different time point of setting the standard for the day.

Anyway, there are currently 2.48 million cumulative deaths worldwide, so almost one-fifth of the deaths occurred in the United States.

The cumulative infection number is 28.8 million.

This is also about a quarter of the total number of confirmed cases worldwide.

Although the number of new confirmed cases a day has recently decreased to the level of 60 to 70,000, compared to other countries, it is still a large number.

With the corona19 death toll in the United States surpassing 500,000, President Biden ordered all federal agencies in the United States to hoist early?

[기자]

That’s right.

President Biden has instructed federal agencies to hoist early to commemorate “the grim milestone of 500,000 coronavirus deaths.”

Early on, it will be hoisted for five days.

The White House also held a candle-lit ceremony in memory of the victims of Corona 19.

President Biden was present to honor the victims.

In addition, we asked for cooperation from all the people to end the corona crisis through compliance with the quarantine guidelines and vaccinations.

In the midst of this, President Pouch, an infectious disease expert in the United States, pointed out that the United States did not respond to Corona 19 better than most countries.

[기자]

That’s right.

Director Anthony Pouch appeared on a local broadcast and pointed out, “The United States is a highly developed country, but looking back now, it has responded better than most other countries.”

In particular, they criticized that they did not take a unified approach at the federal level and responded differently to each state.

He said,’The quarantine was not efficiently implemented by responding to each other’.

He warned that the death toll could rise to 240,000 in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak, but people regretted that they thought we were exaggerating.

“The death toll in the United States now is more than double what was expected at the time,” said Pouch. “I really need everyone to be alert and united.”

Europe, which is speeding up the COVID-19 vaccination, plans to ease the blockade starting next month?

[기자]

That’s right.

In England, UK, the blockade of COVID-19 will be phased out from next month.

All students attend school on March 8th and from the 29th outdoor sports such as soccer, golf and tennis are permitted.

In Scotland, students in the lower grades of elementary school began school on the 22nd.

Germany has also started working on a plan to ease the phased lockdown in three areas: private meetings, schools and restaurants.

[앵커]

Does the fact that Europe is preparing to ease the blockade mean that the Corona 19 situation is getting better?

[기자]

In fact, the situation of Corona 19 is improving after vaccination in various countries.

Studies have shown that the risk of hospitalization fell by around 90% four weeks after vaccination.

A study from the University of Edinburgh found that four weeks after vaccinating Pfizer and AstraZeneca, the risk of hospitalization fell by 85% and 94%, respectively.

Those over the age of 80 decreased by 81%.

The study was conducted in Scotland from the beginning of December to the middle of this month with 1.14 million people who received the vaccine.

The researchers said that although the data are still in the early stages, both vaccines have worked very well, and that this is a reason to be optimistic about the future.

[앵커]

However, there are places in Europe where the blockade has been strengthened, like Nice, the representative resort city of France.

[기자]

That’s right.

In Nice, with the rapid spread of Corona 19, the containment measures were strengthened.

Nice authorities have imposed restrictions on movement from Friday evening to Monday morning for two weeks.

In Nice, the number of new confirmed cases is 600 per 100,000 population, three times the average in France.

Health officials believe it is due to the UK mutant virus.

Germany also caught an emergency because of the mutant virus.

In some regions of Germany, 50% of the new cases were infected with the mutant virus.

German authorities are warning that the current situation could soon lead to more than 80% of the new cases infected with the mutant virus.

Denmark has also closed some of the borders with Germany due to the severe spread of the mutant virus.

In the end, it can be said that the situation in Europe depends on how to prevent the spread of the mutant virus, which spreads much faster than the general Corona 19 virus.
