Martial law has been declared in seven areas in downtown Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city.

As a result, meetings or gatherings of more than 5 people were completely banned in the area.

In addition, curfew was imposed from 8 pm to 4 am.

Earlier, the military regime suggested a tough response this afternoon, saying it would punish the protesters for illegal activities.

Myanmar’s military government issued a statement on state-run TV and said, “The people of Myanmar are rejecting those who practice lawlessness.”

It also said, “Action according to the law will be taken against illegal actions that harm the safety of the country or the public.”

This statement was the military regime’s first stance on the protests of citizens, and was accepted as suggesting a tough response, such as martial law.

From last weekend to today, protests against military coups have been intensifying throughout Myanmar.

Large-scale protests continued in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, as well as in the capital Naepido.
