After the inauguration of the Biden administration, the heads of the ROK, US and Japan security offices, who held the first three-way consultations, reaffirmed their willingness to respond through cooperation between the three countries on the denuclearization of North Korea.

In particular, we agreed to continue to strive for early resumption of US-North Korea negotiations, consensus on the urgency of the North Korean nuclear issue and the need for a diplomatic solution.

The first discussion of the heads of the Korea-US-Japan security office has been concluded, right? Somehow, a lot of North Korea issues have been discussed.

Discussions started around 9 am.

A bilateral consultation was held between the United States and Korea and Japan to explain the review of the US policy toward North Korea.

Then, in the afternoon, a three-party discussion was held.

In a statement, the White House said in a statement after the talks were over that the three security chiefs shared concerns about North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and reaffirmed its commitment to co-operate with the issue of denuclearization.

It has also made it clear that we must cooperate to prevent nuclear proliferation, strengthen deterrence on the Korean Peninsula, and maintain peace and stability.

To this end, we also agreed that the international community, including North Korea, needs to fully implement the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

After the discussion, our security office chief Seo Hoon also explained the contents of the discussion at a press conference.

The ROK, US and Japan said they agreed on the need to continue efforts for early resumption of US-North Korea negotiations.

In particular, he explained that he had an in-depth discussion on various issues related to the preparation or implementation of measures for negotiations with North Korea.

Isn’t it the US policy toward North Korea, which is in the final stage of review of particular interest over this consultation? What was the content?

Director Seo Hoon said that during the security consultation, the US side explained the contents of the ongoing review of North Korea policy.

He also said that communication between the two countries continued from the initiation stage, and that they agreed to continue communication with our side during the remainder of the review process.

There was also a related discussion in the bilateral discussions between the US and South Korea and Japan.

He said he has decided to play a constructive and active role in the process of reviewing US policy toward North Korea.

The heads of the three national security offices also discussed extensively on global issues such as responding to Corona 19, climate change, and promoting the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.

In addition, considering the corona situation, we decided to hold close and continuous consultations between the heads of the three countries’ security offices.
