[앵커]

South Korea and China are scheduled to hold a meeting with foreign ministers in Xiamen, China in a short while.

This morning, it is noteworthy that this is a meeting held following the reaffirmation of North Korea’s cooperation in the denuclearization of North Korea in the United States.

I will connect with Beijing, China to find out about this news. Correspondent Sungwoong Kang!

Haven’t the talks started yet?

[기자]

That’s right.

At 12:30 our time, Foreign Minister Eui-yong Eui and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet.

The meeting place is in Xiamen, Fujian Province in southern China, and because of China’s strict quarantine regulations, coverage is limited.

Today’s talks will be held in a way that Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung and Wang Yi first meet with the minimum number of attendees for about 30 minutes, and then hold an extended meeting.

Following this, we will continue the discussion as a luncheon.

In today’s talks, it seems that North Korea’s nuclear weapons and peace on the Korean Peninsula will be mainly discussed.

It is expected that both Korea and China will reaffirm their position that the issue on the Korean Peninsula should be resolved politically through dialogue.

The Korean government is expected to play a constructive role in China, especially as North Korea has recently rejected dialogue.

It is observed that China will focus on strengthening strategic cooperation with Korea in the face of all-round confrontation with the United States.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed to strengthen coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs, as well as quarantine and economic cooperation, meeting individually with foreign ministers from four Southeast Asian countries over the past three days.

It seems that the strategy is to respond through cooperation with neighboring countries to the situation under pressure from the United States and allies due to the recent issues of human rights in the South China Sea and Xinjiang.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and China is expected to discuss the issue of the removal of retaliation from THAAD, including President Xi Jinping’s visit to Korea, the Korean Wave restriction, and the expansion of cultural exchanges between Korea and China.

The three countries have reaffirmed their cooperation for the denuclearization of North Korea. Will the results of these meetings also affect the meetings of diplomatic ministers between Korea and China?

[기자]

That’s right.

As the Korea-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is held today after the Korea-US-Japan Security Officer’s meeting in the United States is over, foreign ministers of Korea and China are likely to have received the relevant information.

Among the results of the talks between the two countries, it is noted that they agreed on the necessity of cooperation for the denuclearization of North Korea and the full implementation of the resolution of sanctions against North Korea by the Security Council.

Minister Eui-yong Eui-yong believes that as China also agrees with the need for North Korea to denuclearize, there is room for it to play a role in resolving the Korean Peninsula problem.

The ROK and China are also likely to discuss the full implementation of sanctions against North Korea agreed by the heads of the three security offices of the ROK, US, and Japan.

As a permanent member of the Security Council, China is in a position to implement the resolution of sanctions against North Korea.

However, it has argued that sanctions in the field of public welfare, such as the ban on the export of seafood and textiles and the repatriation of all North Korean workers overseas, should be partially lifted.

In this situation, the three countries, South Korea, the United States and Japan have repeatedly pressed the implementation of sanctions against North Korea, thereby highlighting the difference between China and China that the rational concerns of North Korea should be resolved.

In particular, the heads of the three security offices of the ROK, US and Japan discussed security issues, including the Indo-Pacific region, and agreed to cooperate to advance common security goals.

This part is directly related to the issue of the South China Sea and Taiwan, and it is an issue where the US and China are sharply confronting, so there is a concern that it will make Korea’s position to pursue cooperation with China even more difficult.

The Korea-China foreign ministers’ meeting in Xiamen is expected to end at about 3 pm our time.

However, prior to the talks, Minister Eui-yong Eui said in advance that if the discussion is prolonged, the time may be extended a little further, so the end time is flexible.

At the end of the talks, the two countries will each deliver results only in the form of announcements, and Minister Eui-yong Eui-yong will be on his way back to his country in a government-only plane.
