[국제]First attendance at Moon Cheol-myung’s court of North Korea, which Malaysia handed over to the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Justice revealed in detail the charges and tricks of Moon Cheol-myung, a North Korean citizen who was repatriated from Malaysia for money laundering, and said that Moon had first appeared in a courtroom in Washington DC on the 22nd local time.

The US Department of Justice also said that Mr. Moon is affiliated with the Reconnaissance Office, which oversees North Korea’s operations.

The US Department of Justice released a press release on the 22nd of the local time and said that after about two years of legal proceedings, Moon, a North Korean citizen, was handed over to the United States.

The US Department of Justice said, “This is the first case of North Korean citizens delivered to the United States.” He said he was involved in more than 1.5 million dollars in money laundering.

Following that, Mr. Moon explained that money laundering was part of a plan to procure luxury goods from North Korea, saying that he is linked with the Reconnaissance Office, which is subject to sanctions by the United States and the United Nations.

The U.S. Department of Justice also said that Moon and his accomplices tried to avoid being caught by mobilizing accounts and companies under pseudonyms and making transactions that pretend not to be related to North Korea.

He added that this deliberate concealment has led US banks to make dollar transactions that benefit North Korean institutions.

The U.S. Department of Justice explained that Moon, who was charged with six money laundering charges, was detained abroad after being arrested by local authorities on May 14, 2019, and that the prosecution in Washington DC federal court was May 2, 2019.

“Mr. Moon is accused of cheating banks and laundering money to evade sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Nations on North Korea,” said John Demus, Assistant Secretary of State Security at the US Department of Justice.

“We will continue to use the law broadly to protect Americans from sanctions evasion and other national security threats.”
