[국제]Cambodia, quarantine collapsed by Chinese defectors… spreading local infection

Local infections are spreading from Chinese people who have violated self-isolation in Cambodia, known as a corona-clean country.

The authorities have raised the level of punishment for foreigners who ignore the quarantine policy, but the efforts made in quarantine over the past year have been in vain.

Reporter Son Won-hyuk from Cambodia delivers.

Last month, Chinese people who were in quarantine at hotels in downtown Phnom Penh bought a hotel security guard and fled without permission.

They went to clubs and other parts of the city, and after a recurrence of a community infection, they were examined. As a result, two out of four Chinese defectors were confirmed.

The quarantine authorities see their trespassing as the beginning of a group infection, and are tracking contacts through epidemiological investigations, but there have already been hundreds of infected people one after another.

As the act of leaving foreigners became a social problem, the authorities announced that they would deport foreigners who violate the quarantine rules, and passed a bill with a maximum sentence of 3 to 5 years in prison for leaving the quarantine facility.

However, in order to minimize the infection that has already spread rapidly to various regions and prevent the spread of the infection, vaccination is urgent.

Cambodia, where it is not easy to obtain a vaccine, started its first vaccination with the amount donated by China and India, which are engaged in vaccine diplomacy.

Cambodian Prime Minister, who was the first to receive China’s Sinofam, was vaccinated with AstraZeneca at an older age. Instead, Prime Minister Hun Sen’s eldest son went on to become the first Chinese vaccine.

In Cambodia, where medical staff, military personnel, and public officials are classified as inoculated first, vaccine types are divided according to age.

Cambodia, where the donated vaccine alone is insufficient, is also pursuing the purchase of AstraZeneca from Thailand.

Cambodia has fallen into the spread of local infections due to foreigners who have not followed quarantine rules.

It is a policy to prevent community infections and immunize groups with free vaccinations, including non-resident foreigners, instead of strengthening penalties for unauthorized departures, but the key is whether the vaccine shortage can be secured in time.
