[국제]”Attack of Asian Americans in New York, most of them are insane”

Hate attacks targeting Asians in New York, USA, were mostly attributed to homeless people who were frequently arrested by police and had mental problems.

The New York Times reported on the 6th local time that at least five of the seven arrested for attacking Asian New Yorkers in the last two weeks of last month were found to have been judged by the police for “emotional disorders” in the past.

Emotional disorder is a police term for someone who is believed to need psychiatric help.

The other two also showed signs of psychosis, police report.

Notably, Donovan Lawson, 26, was arrested last month for harassing an Asian couple in Brooklyn, New York City, and spitting and punching a Chinese bus driver trying to stop it.

Lawson, a black young man, was a mentally ill homeless man, the New York Times explained, that it was his 33rd arrest by the police at the time.

Also, on the 21st of last month, Eric Deolibe, a Hispanic young man who beat a Chinese woman who participated in an anti-Asian violence rally in Manhattan, and crushed a picket, has been arrested at least 12 times.

New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shay said in a recent broadcast interview, “Before this tragic incident, I always had a history of arrest. We need to deal with this psychotic problem.”

The New York Times notes that the New York City response has been further complicated by the fact that homeless people who have had mental health problems and have already been arrested multiple times appear to have committed predominantly Asian hate crimes.
