In Europe, a growing number of countries are refusing to inoculate the elderly with the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Oxford University in the UK.

Even the Swiss government refused to approve its use at all. It is the first case that Korea has not approved the use of AstraZeneca vaccine in Europe.

On the 29th of last month, the European Union approved the conditional sale of the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University to all adults over 18 years of age.

However, the members’ judgments were different.

Germany, France, Austria and Sweden have recommended this vaccine only for people under the age of 65.

Ireland also says it currently has no plans to get AstraZeneca vaccines to people over 65.

The vaccine was only recommended for people under the age of 70 in Finland, under 60 in Poland and under 55 in Belgium.

Italy recommended first use for people under the age of 55, but revised its opinion that people over the age of 55 could get the vaccine if they were healthy.

Among European countries that are not EU member states, Norway has said that AstraZeneca vaccine will not be given to people over the age of 65.

Switzerland went a step further and withheld the approval of the AstraZeneca vaccine altogether.

The European Medicines Agency, EMA, has not yet had enough data and results to show how well the AstraZeneca vaccine will work in people over the age of 55, but said it expects it to have a protective effect.

International controversy and distrust about the AstraZeneca vaccine, which the EU has approved for use in the region for the third time, is raising anxiety about vaccination itself.
