[국제]Asian hate crimes received by the New York Police 3 cases in 2019 → 35 cases this year

It has been confirmed that hate crimes against Asians are on the rise in New York, USA.

The New York Times reported in a report on the 4th local time that the number of Asian hate crimes filed by the NYPD was only 3 in 2019, but increased to 28 last year.

In particular, 35 cases were reported to the New York Police this year, exceeding the total number of reports last year.

The newspaper analyzed that hate crimes are generally less reported to the police, so the actual number of incidents will be higher.

The newspaper reports that, in its own analysis of media reports across the United States, more than 110 hate crimes against Asians have occurred since March last year.

The boundaries of hate crimes may become unclear depending on whether the offender targets a specific group or randomly selects victims, but the New York Times explained that it only counted crimes specifically targeting Asians.

In particular, in New York and Boston, hate crimes against races other than Asians declined.

It is said that the surge in reports of hate crimes against Asians cannot be dismissed as a coincidence.

Half of the crimes counted were accompanied by explicit discriminatory remarks against Asians, such as “Go back to China” or “You are a virus” during the crime.

The New York Times pointed out that former President Donald Trump has spread antipathy against Asians by calling Corona 19 a “Chinese virus”.
