Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on March 2 that his state’s mask mandate will be lifted and all businesses will be allowed to open at full capacity, local media reported.

“Effective next Wednesday all businesses of any type are allowed to open 100%,” Abbott said, adding that the lifting of the COVID-19-related restrictions will go into effect March 10.

The United States reported a 3% decline in new cases of COVID-19 last week, a much smaller drop than in the previous six weeks, and health officials warned that progress against the global pandemic was stalling.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Monday (March 1) she was alarmed by some local governments rolling back restrictions on masks and social distancing just as more infectious variants of the virus are spreading.
