This unit is the only unit in the entire army in charge of both forward GOP and coastal borders.

Nevertheless, it is said that it operates three brigades like other GOP divisions.

Accordingly, unlike other GOP divisions, which consist of two brigades and one reserve brigade, which perform the boundary mission, all three brigades are being put into the land and coastal boundaries without reserve brigades.

This is the reason why it is pointed out that the boundary responsibility area is excessive than the limited troop level whenever the boundary failure event is repeated.

At the general meeting of the National Defense Commission held in the National Assembly the day before, there were several issues raised by lawmakers in this regard.

Defense Commissioner Min Hong-cheol pointed out that “the 22nd Division’s area of ​​responsibility for the border is too wide to be over 100km,” he said. “We need to address the structural problem of lack of vigilance.”

He said, “I failed the border, but it can be unfair.”

In addition, Democratic Party Rep. Ahn Gyu-baek also asked, “(22th Division) has four times more responsibility than other divisions,” and “Can we talk about the same number of people and equipment, but a hole was drilled?”

Accordingly, Defense Minister Seo-wook also admitted that there are some difficulties due to the characteristics of the 22nd Division’s troops.

Minister Seo said, “The 22nd Division must be wary of the iron fence and the coast at the same time, and it is a unit with many difficulties such as operational elements and the natural environment,” he said. “There is a lack of unit formation, so we have to look into it.”

He added, “I will try to diagnose the division in detail,” he added.

However, regarding the failure of this alert, Secretary Seo cited the poor alertness of the soldiers as a direct cause.
