The Bank of Korea has frozen the benchmark interest rate, which is currently 0.5% per annum, saying that the domestic economy will show a modest recovery, but uncertainties in the growth path will be high.

BOK Governor Lee Joo-yul expressed concern over so-called’debt struggles’, saying that the stock price has recently risen very quickly, and also expressed the view that it is desirable to selectively support disaster subsidies.

The Bank of Korea Financial and Monetary Committee decided to keep the current annual rate of 0.5% at its first regular meeting this year.

It was frozen five times in a row after lowering the base rate from 0.75% to 0.5% in May last year.

The Financial Services Commission said, “In the future, the domestic economy is expected to show a modest recovery, centered on exports and investments, but the uncertainty in the growth path is high.”

BOK Governor Lee Ju-yeol also said that it is premature to change the stance of interest rate policy given the real economic conditions.

The KFTC predicted that this year’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate will be around 3% as expected in November last year.

Governor Lee Joo-yeol said, “There is little possibility that household debt insolvency will increase a lot.”

As for the method of dispensing subsidies payment, he expressed the position that selective support is desirable.

Governor Lee was concerned about the debt investment he owed, saying the pace of the stock price has risen very quickly.

Governor Lee added that if the stock price is too fast, the stock price could be adjusted as much as possible due to changes in monetary policy stances in major countries, unexpected geopolitical risks, and disruption in the supply of the Corona 19 vaccine, and could be shaken even by a small shock.
