According to the employment trend for February released by the National Statistical Office, the number of employed people last month decreased by 473,000 from a year ago.

The decline in the number of employed has continued for 12 consecutive months since the start of the Corona 19 crisis in March last year.

It is the longest period since the decline for 16 consecutive months during the financial crisis.

However, compared to January, when 982,000 people fell, the decline was cut in half in February.

As social distancing has eased and public job vacancies have been filled, the decline in the number of employed has been smaller than that of the previous month.

In February, the number of employed in the face-to-face service industries such as lodging and restaurant businesses and wholesale and retail businesses continued to decline.

In addition, the number of employed has increased in the health industry, social welfare service industry, public administration and national defense, and social security administration.

By age, the number of employed decreased in most of the age groups, but increased by 212,000 for those aged 60 and over.

It is analyzed as the impact of the government’s job projects, such as senior citizens’ jobs, started in earnest.

The number of unemployed people increased by 200,000 to 1353,000, and the unemployment rate was 4.9%, up 0.8 percentage points from a year ago.

Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki said that the employment trend in February was markedly eased by the employment market difficulties caused by the third spread of Corona 19.

At the same time, he said, considering the start of vaccination and easing the distance from quarantine, continued export improvement, and the underlying impact of the employment shock in March last year, the employment index improvement trend is expected to continue in March.

So far, the Ministry of Economy has delivered it.
