President Moon Jae-in ordered a’Cheongwadae full investigation’ over allegations of preliminary speculation by employees of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) in Gwangmyeong and Siheung, Gyeonggi-do.
A key member of the Blue House met with reporters on the 5th and said, “President Moon ordered a swift and thorough investigation into the land transaction of the third new city for all employees and their families, including the chief secretary and administrative officer of the Blue House.”
Accordingly, the Blue House has set up an investigation plan and initiated its own investigation. In addition, a task force (TF), headed by President Yoo Young-min, as a team leader, is also in operation to support the joint investigation team under the Prime Minister’s Office and to check the situation, including the preparation of countermeasures, a key official said.
In particular, President Moon instructed the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Byun Chang-heum to “as a former president of LH, come to this issue with extraordinary awareness and determination.”
According to a meeting of lawyers for a democratic society that raised the suspicion of “land speculation” by LH employees on the 2nd, dozens of reports have been pouring out ever since. Reports related to public officials and politicians were included regardless of regions such as Gwangju and Busan. Minbyun’s lawyer Seo Seong-min said, “I will first collect and accumulate information and watch the results of the government’s total investigation.”
Minbyun and the Participation Solidarity raised suspicion that LH employees first bought 23,028 ㎡ (about 7,000 pyeong) of land in Gwangmyeong and Siheung new cities, which were announced as new public housing sites, for about 10 billion won. The government has formed a joint investigation team with the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Security, and is conducting a full investigation of allegations of speculation in the 3rd new city by LH employees. The auditor will also review the audit status.
Political circles are discussing proposals for amendments to related laws, including measures to strengthen punishment for speculation by public officials using undisclosed inside information.
