President Moon attended the 76th Arbor Day event held at the Seoul Combined Cycle Power Plant in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and said, “In urban forests in Seoul, ultrafine dust is 40% lower than in urban areas. Isn’t that enough to live?” he said.

This is the second time following President Moon’s inauguration to attend an Arbor Day event held outside after last year. President Moon last year visited Gangneung, Gangwon-do, which was affected by forest fires in 2019.

This year’s ceremony was held in the form of planting trees with 16 Sangji Elementary School students. President Moon planted a boxwood tree, meaning “tolerate, endure,” with students. The Blue House explained that the background of choosing boxwood was “showing the willingness to overcome the corona.” President Moon’s couple wore mountaineering clothes differently than usual, considering planting trees. For the movement, a conventional hydrogen car’Nexo’ was used.

The Blue House has repeatedly emphasized the fact that it was held at the Seoul Combined Cycle Power Plant, where the Arbor Day event was held on this day before the event. This is the place where the Dangin-ri power plant, a coal-fired power plant, was located. Currently, power generation facilities have been underground and most parks have been built on the ground.

President Moon also directly explained the meaning of the venue. He said, “This is the place where Korea’s first coal power plant was located, and it was called the Dangin-ri power plant.” “We abolished coal and heavy oil power generation for the citizens of Seoul, and built the world’s first combined LNG power plant in the basement of the city. “The coal power plant supplies electricity, but it has a disadvantage of damaging the environment by emitting a lot of greenhouse gases and fine dust,” he said. “It is very meaningful to plant trees in a place where a coal power plant turns into a park.”

President Moon also said, “Tree planting is necessary as a countermeasure for global warming and coal count neutralization.

President Moon continued, “We declared carbon neutrality in 2050 and set a goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050. We plan to absorb more carbon by planting 3 billion more trees by 2050.” In connection with the 3 billion tree planting plan mentioned by President Moon, Forest Service Commissioner Choi Byung-am explained, “There are 2.7 billion trees in Korea and about 300 million trees planting in North Korea through inter-Korean cooperation.”

In relation to the creation of urban forests emphasized by President Moon on this day, the Democratic Party Mayor Park Young-seon and the Democratic Party Mayor of Seoul have presented their core pledges with the goal of creating a’vertical garden’ in downtown Seoul.
In order to reduce carbon emissions, it is said that one vertical garden will be created in 21 multi-nuclear cities in Seoul. In response, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, the Mayor of the People’s Power, cited the case of’Chii (71) Forest Garden’ in Chengdu, China, in a broadcast discussion on the 29th of last month. Mosquitoes are infested, and only 10 out of 800 households live,” he criticized, saying, “The vertical garden is a luxurious building that is not suitable for mountainous Seoul.”

In addition to President Moon’s couple, Kim Hyun-soo, Minister of Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Food, Sung Yun-mo, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Environment Minister Han Jeong-ae attended the event.
