To develop a trilateral common vision based on democratic values
On the 2nd (local time), the heads of the ROK-US-Japan security office reaffirmed their willingness to cooperate with the three countries for the denuclearization of North Korea. It also agreed to cooperate in fully implementing the UN Security Council resolution against North Korea and strengthening deterrence on the Korean Peninsula.
The White House announced that it had met with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at the Naval Academy near Washington, DC on the same day, South Korean National Security Officer Seo Hun Seo, and Japanese Security Director Shigeru Kitamura meeting to discuss U.S. policy toward North Korea. The White House explained that they reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to working together to protect and advance their common security goals.
Various issues, including the Indo-Pacific issue, were discussed at the meeting of the heads of the three countries’ security offices. The meeting held at the Naval Academy, not the White House, is interpreted as containing the message of the United States to focus on the Indo-Pacific strategy, including guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the high seas such as the South China Sea.
At the meeting, the heads of the trilateral security offices shared concerns about North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Subsequently, it was decided to solve these problems through cooperation between the three countries for denuclearization. They shared their opinion that the international community, including North Korea, should fully implement the resolutions of the UN Security Council. It also agreed to cooperate to prevent nuclear proliferation, strengthen deterrence on the Korean Peninsula, and maintain peace and stability.
At this meeting, the United States reaffirmed its unchanging alliance commitment to both Korea and Japan. Korea and Japan emphasized the importance of bilateral relations and trilateral cooperation on regional and global security. At this meeting, the importance of reunions of separated families between the two Koreas and the rapid resolution of the abduction of Japanese citizens were also discussed.
Meanwhile, the heads of the security offices of the three countries shared their opinion that they are working together to resolve other major problems, including the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). It also discussed preventing future epidemics, preventing climate change, and promoting Myanmar’s immediate return to democracy. In addition, they agreed to strengthen mutual ties and develop a common vision based on common democratic values.
